About The Role

We are seeking an experienced Backend Engineer to join our Consumer Onboarding team at Wise. This role presents a unique opportunity to significantly impact our growing customer base by enhancing the onboarding experience for new users worldwide. As a key member of the team, you will lead efforts to streamline and improve the process of setting up accounts and resolving initial international money transfer needs. Your expertise will help shape the technical vision and roadmap, ensuring the delivery of scalable, robust, and user-friendly solutions. You will work closely with cross-functional teams—including product managers, designers, data analysts, and fellow engineers—to create intuitive onboarding flows that are faster, more efficient, and scalable to meet our expanding global footprint. This position offers a chance to lead high-impact projects, mentor junior engineers, and contribute to the strategic growth of Wise’s core financial infrastructure.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess substantial experience in building and maintaining distributed, high-scalability systems and microservices architectures. You should have a strong customer and product-oriented mindset, with proven experience developing customer-facing products. Technical expertise in object-oriented programming languages such as Java or similar, along with familiarity with modern technology stacks, is essential. You should have a passion for mentoring and sharing knowledge, acting as a force multiplier within your team. Excellent communication skills are vital, enabling you to articulate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams—including designers, product managers, data analysts, and mobile or frontend engineers—is highly desirable. Bonus points if you have experience working across multiple functions and understanding the full stack of product development.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with the Product Manager and Engineering Lead to define and shape the team’s technical and product roadmap, ensuring alignment with Wise’s overall strategic goals.
  • Drive the planning, execution, and delivery of high-impact projects from conception through implementation, focusing on improving onboarding flows and user journeys.
  • Ensure your team is well-resourced, effectively planning sprints and commitments, and delivering on their objectives with high quality and efficiency.
  • Own the health and performance of the systems and services within your scope, maintaining scalability, reliability, and maintainability to support business growth.
  • Lead technical discovery, design solutions, and oversee scoping and execution, ensuring technical excellence and adherence to best practices.
  • Collaborate with other senior engineers and technical leads across the onboarding squad and wider Wise engineering teams to align on technical strategy and standards.
  • Mentor and coach engineers within your team, supporting their professional growth and fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Monitor system health, troubleshoot issues proactively, and implement improvements to optimize performance and scalability.
