Backend Software Engineering Team Lead

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Backend Software Engineering Team Lead based in United Kingdom.

As a Backend Software Engineering Team Lead, you will combine technical leadership with hands-on software development to deliver scalable, high-performance backend solutions. You will lead a team of experienced engineers, driving architectural decisions, fostering technical excellence, and ensuring the successful delivery of complex software projects. Working in a fully remote, collaborative environment, you will mentor team members, improve engineering practices, and contribute directly to the design and implementation of modern distributed systems. This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate engineering leader who enjoys balancing people management with technical innovation while helping build reliable, cloud-native applications at scale.

Accountabilities

  • Lead, mentor, and support a team of backend software engineers, fostering a collaborative, high-performing, and growth-oriented culture.
  • Provide technical leadership by defining software architecture, promoting engineering best practices, and maintaining high standards of code quality.
  • Contribute hands-on to backend development, designing and implementing scalable, reliable, and maintainable software solutions.
  • Drive the full software development lifecycle, from technical planning and design through implementation, testing, deployment, and continuous improvement.
  • Conduct code reviews, provide constructive technical feedback, and coach team members to strengthen engineering capabilities.
  • Manage performance, workload allocation, career development, and regular feedback for team members.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver high-quality software aligned with business priorities and project timelines.
  • Continuously improve development processes, tooling, and engineering practices to enhance productivity, reliability, and delivery efficiency.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of professional software development experience, with a strong focus on backend technologies such as Java, Node.js, Python, Go, or similar languages.
  • At least 2 years of experience leading engineering teams, including mentoring, performance management, workload planning, and technical leadership.
  • Strong expertise in designing scalable software architectures, distributed systems, APIs, and microservices-based applications.
  • Hands-on experience developing enterprise backend solutions using modern frameworks, cloud platforms, and DevOps practices.
  • Solid understanding of software engineering best practices, code quality, testing, CI/CD pipelines, and agile development methodologies.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, with experience collaborating effectively across remote and internationally distributed teams.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a passion for technology, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to balance strategic technical leadership with active software development responsibilities.
