BSS, part of Travis Perkins plc, are now hiring for an exceptional Balance Sheet Accountant to join our finance team and play a pivotal role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial statements.
This is far more than a traditional reporting role. You'll be a trusted partner across the finance department, a proactive problem solver and a key contributor to driving modern systems and process improvements across a complex multi-company group. If you're a detail oriented, technically strong accountant who thrives on maintaining robust controls, collaborating with diverse stakeholders and utilising technology to optimise performance, we'd love to hear from you.
The Opportunity
As Balance Sheet Accountant, reporting into the Finance Manager, you will hold a critical role in ensuring the complete accuracy of BSS financial statements.
You will have reporting responsibilities that span across multiple business entities, including BSS, TF Solutions and BSS Ireland. Working within a dynamic central function, you will act as the absolute go to expert for balance sheet queries, ensuring our month end timelines are seamlessly met while actively collaborating on innovative projects like implementing AI to improve our reconciliation workflows.
What You'll Be Doing
- Month-End Close: Supporting the month-end close process to ensure accounts for all three businesses are produced accurately and on time.
- Variance Analysis: Analysing balance sheet variances, providing commentary on movements and investigating root causes to resolve reconciliation issues.
- Systems Optimisation: Working with the Kerridge systems team to drive ERP improvements that make account reconciliation smoother and more precise.
- Controls & Governance: Maintaining robust internal controls and ensuring complete, audit-ready documentation for all balance sheet accounts.
- Audit Management: Assisting with year-end audit preparation by providing clean schedules and support to external auditors.
- Process Improvement: Collaborating with the wider finance team and the systems accountant to identify reporting improvements and implement AI within reconciliation processes.
- Stakeholder Reporting: Ensuring timely reporting to key stakeholders, including preparing board packs and attending Regional Director meetings.
- Subject Matter Expertise: Acting as the primary point of contact for balance sheet queries and partnering with the Finance Manager to elevate systems across the group.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
