Job Summary

To work as an effective member of the multi-disciplinary team assisting with patient care activities under the direct supervision of a registered Theatre Practitioner. Following appropriate training and assessment of competence undertake identified and delegated clinical and non-clinical duties.

The post holder will undertake the movement of patients, equipment, and designated items throughout the hospital and will contribute to the maintenance of a clean and safe working environment.

The post holder will uphold the trust values and is expected to behave at all times in a way that demonstrates commitment to the delivery of thoughtful, compassionate patient care and continuous improvement of patient care quality, outcomes, and experience.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

  • Provide good quality personalised care throughout their peri-operative journey in accordance with agreed local and national standards. Always ensuring the maintenance of confidentiality and the privacy and dignity of patients.
  • Assist in the positioning of patients in theatre before surgery and in the recovery area.
  • Wear lead aprons and other radiation protection equipment for extended periods during shifts.
  • The cleaning and preparation of the Operating Theatre, associated areas, and equipment, the Anaesthetic rooms, and the recovery areas inclusive of patient trolleys.
  • Transport patients between Wards and Theatre, assisting with transferring patients to and from the operating table and help position them for surgical procedures under supervision of the registered Theatre Practitioner.
  • Assist to maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety, and security legislation, policies, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Maintaining accurate records of all relevant theatre documentation.
  • Remove soiled linen, theatre clinical waste, black bag, and cardboard rubbish from Operating Theatres to collection points ensuring conformity with the Trust/Theatre Waste Policy.
  • To be familiar with and comply with all Trust/Theatre Policies, Practices, and Procedures.
  • To take part in an annual appraisal.
  • To be flexible to meet the needs of the service.
  • To undertake any other duties that are required, commensurate with the post and grade and have been discussed with the post holder.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Evidence of Maths/English Qualifications at Level 2 or Above.
  • Vocational qualification at level 2 or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Level 2 examples: GCSE Grades 9-4 (A-C), Level 2 Diploma in health care support / NVQ, Functional Skills Level 2.
  • Internationally educated applicants will have to evidence UK ENIC (the UK National Information Centre) Statements of compatibility.

Desirable

  • Care Certificate or can demonstrate prior skills, knowledge, and experience that meet the 15 minimum standards described by Health Education England (HEE) Skills for Health.

Experience

Essential

  • Experience of working/participating as part of a team as an employee/volunteer.
  • Ability to demonstrate/articulate an understanding of the role and tasks involved and can describe the physical and emotional aspects of the role and some duties.
  • Can link the Trust values (Kind, Bold, Connected) to the role and provide examples from personal experience which demonstrate understanding in relation to the role.
  • Can explain why training/education and approaches to care need to be consistent in relation to safety and patient experience.
  • Shows enthusiasm for the role and is interested in working in a theatre/interventional radiology practice setting.

Desirable

  • Has experience of working in a person-centred/facing role in a paid or voluntary capacity.
  • Understanding of the principles of safeguarding in relation to this role.

  • Flexible approach to shift patterns and place of work this may include working in different practice settings in different locations dependent upon service need.
