Band 3 Senior Pharmacy Assistant

Senior Pharmacy Assistant – Band 3 (Good Hope Hospital)

Job Summary

We are seeking an enthusiastic individual with a flexible working approach to deliver a high-quality, patient-focused pharmacy service at Good Hope Hospital.

Applications are invited from all dispensing assistants, including those based in the community with no previous hospital experience. This is an excellent opportunity to progress your pharmacy career and transition into the hospital sector.

The successful candidate will support the pharmacy dispensary, stores, and distribution, ensuring safe, accurate, and timely medication supply. Full training will be provided for this diverse role.

You will join an expanding team of highly professional and dedicated staff committed to delivering an excellent, patient-focused service.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

Essential qualifications and competencies include:

  • Meet the essential criteria of the job specification.
  • Hold a QCF Level 2 in Pharmacy Services (formerly NVQ Level 2 Pharmacy Assistant) or an equivalent qualification.

Key Responsibilities (Typical Role Duties)

The role involves:

  • Dispensing for inpatients and outpatients
  • Stock control and stockroom management
  • Reception and telecommunication duties
  • Checking and assembling ward stock items
  • Preparing discharge prescriptions (including blister packs)
  • Processing controlled drug orders
  • Maintaining the emergency drug cupboard
  • Emotional support of pre-registration technicians
  • Supervising junior pharmacy staff
  • Team leadership responsibilities
  • Flexible working, including late nights, weekends, and bank holidays

Person Specification

Qualifications (Essential)

  • GCSE Grade C/4 or above in English and Mathematics (or equivalent).
  • Either:
    • NVQ Level 2 Certificate in Pharmacy Service Skills (QCF) / BTEC Level 2 Certificate in Pharmaceutical Science, or
    • Accredited Dispensing Assistants Course (NPA).

Experience (Essential)

  • Post-NVQ Level 2 with:
    • Developmental experience in pharmacy dispensing (minimum 1 year).
    • Annual revalidation as an accredited dispenser via approved training.
  • Familiarity with pharmacy and hospitals IT systems (e.g. stock/pacs systems).
  • Health & Safety awareness:
    • Manual handling compliance.
    • COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health).
  • Understanding of dispensing, stock control, supply chains, and waste reduction practices.
  • Knowledge of cost-effective service delivery per Dispensing Code of Practice.
  • Criminal record check: Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) required under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1975.

Desirable Skills

  • Hospital pharmacy experience at the dispensing support level.
  • Staff training and mentoring experience.
  • Proven competence with JAC pharmacy system or similar software.
  • Drug knowledge (potential side effects, counselling guidance tools).
