Band 4 Medical Secretary – Diabetes Department

Job Summary

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic and motivated full-time band 4 medical secretary to join our friendly secretarial team within the Diabetes Department at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham.

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who thrives on challenge and loves to take initiative. The successful candidate will be a key member of the Secretarial Team, responsible for delivering professional, high-quality secretarial and administrative support within a medical setting.


Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in medical secretarial work
  • Excellent touch-typing and audio typing skills
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology
  • Working knowledge of the RTT (Referral to Treatment) pathway
  • Experience managing clinical waiting lists
  • Fluency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and healthcare IT systems

Person Specification

Qualifications (Essential)

  • GCSE English & Maths (Grade 9-4/C or above)
  • NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration (or equivalent experience in a clerical role)

Desirable Qualifications

  • AMSPAR Certificate or equivalent qualification in medical terminology

Experience (Essential)

  • Customer/patient service experience
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Experience using healthcare IT systems

Desirable Experience

  • Capabilities in a busy clinical environment
  • Previous healthcare.admin pathway
