Band 5 Orthopaedic Technician

Skilled Orthopaedic Technician – Trauma & Orthopaedics

About the Role

An exciting opportunity exists for a qualified Orthopaedic Technician to join our busy Trauma and Orthopaedic Service at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. This role allows you to work across both Goodmayes (KGH) and Romford (Queen’s Hospital) sites, delivering high-quality patient care across a range of areas, including:

  • Fracture and orthopaedic clinics
  • Wards and theatres
  • Emergency Departments (A&E)
  • Paediatric services

As part of a multidisciplinary team, you will play a critical role in providing specialist orthopaedic care to a diverse patient population. The role offers the chance to develop your career in a progressive, innovative environment while contributing to service improvements.


Core Responsibilities

Clinical Practice

  • Deliver a comprehensive casting, splinting, bracing, and orthotic service, including:
    • Application of routine and complex casts
    • Specialist techniques such as Ponseti casting and Total Contact Casting
  • Perform basic wound care procedures
  • Safely and correctly remove K-wires, clips, and sutures where appropriate
  • Assess patient needs, prioritise workload, and provide expert clinical advice and education to patients, families, and carers

Patient Support & Care

  • Provide compassionate support to patients experiencing anxiety, pain, or distress following injury or trauma
  • Collaborate with medical, nursing, therapy, and orthotic teams to ensure safe, effective care
  • Act as a clinical support figure and role model to colleagues, promoting professional standards

Departmental Contributions

  • Contribute to service improvement initiatives
  • Maintain nursing documentation and registration obligations
  • Advise on practical and safe solutions to patient care needs
  • Perform best fit and orthopaedic measurements to assess patient requirements

Autonomy & Professionalism

  • Work autonomously as an independent practitioner within orthopaedic settings
  • Demonstrate high professional and clinical standards

Requirements & Qualities

Essential

  • Current qualification as an Orthopaedic Technician (state-registered, or equivalent)
  • Experience in casting, splinting, and patient assessment
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to support anxious patients with empathy and professionalism
  • Commitment to ongoing learning and service improvement

Desirable

  • Knowledge of Ponseti casting and Total Contact Casting
  • Experience working in emergency (A&E), paediatric, or orthopaedic theatre settings
  • Understanding of electronic patient records (EPMR)
