Specialist Dental Nurse – Band 5 (22.5 Hours, Permanent)

Community Dental Nurse – New & Exciting Patient Pathway Role
We are looking for a passionate Specialist Dental Nurse to join our dynamic team within Birmingham Community NHS Dental Nursing Services. Our multi-disciplinary team delivers a variety of dental treatments under:
- Local anaesthetic
- Conscious sedation
- General anaesthesia
The Role
Job Title: Band 5 Specialist Dental Nurse
Shift Pattern: 22.5 hours (0.6 WTE), permanent Contract Hours: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday
Key Responsibilities
Clinical & Operational Support
- Provide expert clinical nursing support to specialist dental services across all divisional sites, responding to complex patient needs.
- Ensure the highest standard of patient care and confidentiality across dental clinics.
- Manage patients with dental, social and medical complexities.
Equipment & Supplies
- Maintain stock control and rotation of dental consumables and coordinate supplier orders.
- Prepare, sterilise, and maintain specialist dental equipment.
- Safely handle and dispose of clinical waste (including bodily fluids).
Patient Care & Documentation
- Assist in pre-operative patient assessments, including height, weight, and blood pressure measurements.
- Record and contribute to patient records in compliance with trust protocols.
- Uphold all NHS Trust policies and procedures.

Team Development & Training
- Identify staff/student training needs and escalate with the Director of Dental Nursing/Service Lead.
- Work with the University of Birmingham School of Dental Nursing and School of Hygiene and Therapy to deliver training programmes across disciplines.
- Facilitate quality improvement and clinical governance activities specific to the dental service.
Specialist Health & Safety
- Must hold an active valid Dental Sedation Certificate (IV and IHS).
- Must be up to date with ongoing sedation training and provide a copy of their CPD log upon request.
- Required to travel to other eligible sites/locations as needed.
Requirements
- Qualifications and Certifications:
- Registered Specialist Dental Nurse
- Current certificate in Dental Sedation (IV and Intravenous/Intra-Hoard Sedation - IHS).
- Evidence of up-to-date training logs for sedation specialisms.
- Skills & Experience:
- Experience delivering care for patients with complex medical, social or dental needs.
- Strong ability to follow JCIs and Clinical Governance protocols.
- Flexibility to adapt to varying clinic schedules and sites.
