Every patient recovering from orthopaedic or spinal surgery deserves expert, compassionate care that helps them regain their independence with confidence.
As a Staff Nurse on our Orthopaedic & Spinal Ward, you'll care for patients recovering from a wide range of planned and complex procedures, working alongside experienced consultants and a supportive multidisciplinary team. Whether you're looking to strengthen your surgical nursing experience or take the next step in your career, you'll find plenty of opportunities to learn, develop, and make a genuine difference every day.
A little about the role
Joining our Orthopaedic & Spinal Ward means becoming part of a team that prides itself on delivering exceptional patient care while supporting one another to continually develop.
We care for patients throughout their inpatient journey, from admission through to discharge, helping them recover safely following complex orthopaedic and spinal procedures. Working closely with physiotherapists, consultants, pain specialists, and the wider multidisciplinary team, we focus on delivering evidence-based care that supports both recovery and rehabilitation.
As a Staff Nurse, you'll manage your own clinical workload while also working collaboratively with colleagues to deliver safe, personalised care. You'll have the opportunity to develop your leadership skills by mentoring junior staff and student nurses, contributing to service improvements, and taking charge of the ward when required, with the support of experienced senior nurses.
What you'll be doing
- Deliver high quality, evidence-based nursing care to orthopaedic and spinal patients.
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualised patient care.
- Monitor patients throughout their recovery and respond appropriately to changes in their condition.
- Recognise and respond effectively to deteriorating patients and clinical emergencies.
- Work collaboratively with consultants and the multidisciplinary team to coordinate holistic patient care.
- Administer medications safely in accordance with NMC guidelines.
- Support patients and families throughout their inpatient journey.
- Maintain accurate patient records and clinical documentation.
- Supervise and support Healthcare Assistants, student nurses, and junior colleagues.
- Participate in clinical governance, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
