About the Role

As a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (SCPHN) School Nurse, you will be part of a multi-disciplinary team delivering the Healthy Child Programme.

Key Responsibilities Under Clinical Leadership:

  • Continue responsibility for the assessment of health needs, including development, implementation, and evaluation/audit of evidence-based interventions.
  • Ensure the quality and standard of care in delivering an effective school nursing service to improve outcomes for the school-aged population (5–19).
  • Deliver a universal core service, provide targeted interventions, address health inequalities, and refer to specialist services where necessary.
  • Bear safeguarding responsibilities, including supporting the school immunisations programme.
  • Provide mentorship to students, line management of a skill-mixed 0-19 team, and conduct staff appraisals.

Main Responsibilities

  • Team Leadership: Lead and support a skill-mixed team to deliver safe, equitable services within the 5–19 Healthy Child Programme.
  • Case & Risk Management: Prioritise high-risk cases, delegate effectively, and promote development through supervision and appraisals.
  • Engagement & Collaboration: Build positive relationships with schools, families, and multidisciplinary partners, ensuring integrated support for children and young people.
  • Clinical Care & Interventions:
    • Provide assessments, targeted interventions, immunisations, and specialist clinics.
    • Identify unmet needs, make referrals, and deliver care in line with safeguarding procedures.
  • Health Promotion: Plan and deliver health promotion (e.g., PSHE, group sessions, drop-ins) and contribute to service initiatives.
  • Safeguarding & Compliance:
    • Respond promptly to safeguarding concerns, attend protection meetings, and maintain clear, compliant documentation.
    • Ensure bundled compliance and adherence to Children and Families (NI) regulations.
  • Service Improvement & Policy:
    • Manage workloads and support team priorities, contributing to service planning, audits, and continuous improvement.
    • Support protocol development, lead audits, provide commissioning data, and promote evidence-based practice.
  • Maintenance & Compliance:
    • Maintain equipment, report replacement needs, and support infection control and immunisation uptake.
    • Work within NMC standards, maintain CPD, and support junior staff development under the guidance of the Clinical Team Lead.

Ideal Candidate

Essential Requirements:

  • Registered Nurse (RN1) with an SCPHN – School Nurse qualification.
  • Current NMC Part 3 registration.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and transferable clinical skills.
  • Knowledge of NHS and CYP public health priorities.
  • Experience in:
    • Leadership
    • Multi-disciplinary teamwork
    • Service improvement (e.g., audits, research, change management).
  • Strong organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills, including prioritisation, delegation, and conflict resolution.
  • Competent in IT and digital record-keeping.
  • Resilient, adaptable, and professional with high personal integrity.

Desirable Additional Qualifications:

  • Registered Nurse – Child Branch qualification.
  • Mentorship or supervision qualifications (e.g., Child Protection Supervisor, Clinical Supervision Facilitator).
  • Additional training in:
    • PSHE delivery
    • Sexual health education
    • Immunisation (including 2-day foundation courses).
  • Recent experience working directly with CYP (Children & Young People) and families.
  • Completion of safeguarding modules.

Other Requirements:

  • Full UK driving licence and access to a car insured for business use.
