Band 6 Specialist Speech and Language Therapist- Part Rotational
Job Summary

Due to internal movement our supportive, innovative and forward-thinking SLT team at QEHB has the opportunity to welcome a part rotational Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist for 12 months.
The static element of the role to be within healthcare for older people and the first rotational element will be within acute medicine. Other rotational specialities include Stroke, Head & Neck Cancer, Voice, Respiratory Support Unit, Specialist Surgery, Outpatients and Critical Care.
We have a large yet close-knit, highly skilled team who contribute to our robust supervision structure innovation, participation in research and clinical/professional development are actively encouraged. We have well-established SLT led Videofluoroscopy, FEES and SVR services so opportunities to access these instrumental assessments to help to shape your clinical practice would also be available.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
This role is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and is fixed term for 12 months.
The successful candidate would be part of the Healthcare for Older People team and benefit from an initial 9-month rotation in the Acute Medicine team for the remainder of their working week. The role is largely based on acute wards with opportunities for outpatient work through some of the rotations.
We have a large team who share a caseload of diverse patient cohorts so being a team player is essential. Each team has a team leader, peer specialist SLTs, NQP SLTs and SLTAs who are all supported by Clinical Leads, a Professional Lead and a Consultant SLT. We would welcome a candidate who is has experience working with patients in the specialist areas, but our supportive team will be willing to support your development.
Your Responsibilities Will Include, But Not Be Limited To
assessing and managing patients with swallowing and communication disorders service development and audit training of junior colleagues and students working towards utilising specialist assessments such e.g. FEES, tracheostomy working flexibly and thriving in a fast-paced environment

Person specification
Qualifications
Essential
A good standard of secondary education including A-Level or equivalent.
BSc or recognised MSc degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
Membership of RCSLT.
Registration with HCPC.
Completed RCSLT Level C dysphagia competencies/Level 5 EDS competencies (or above).
Desirable
Advanced competencies such as tracheostomy, FEES or video fluoroscopy.
Experience
Essential
Experience of working independently with adult dysphagia caseload at a specialist level.
Experience working within a Healthcare for Older People/Acute Medicine setting.
Experience of working independently within an acute hospital setting.
Experience of working successfully as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
Post-graduate training, through attendance at short courses and/or via personal study.
Experience of holding own clinical caseload.
Desirable
Membership of a relevant Clinical Excellence Network (CEN).
Experience supervising or training junior colleagues.
Experience of training Speech and Language Therapy undergraduates and junior SLTs.
Experience of working within the NHS.
Additional Criteria
Essential
Theoretical and practical knowledge of dysphagia, dysarthria, dyspraxia and dysphonia and dysphasia.
Theoretical and practical knowledge of treatment and management of patients with a range of acute and/or long-term progressive conditions.
Ability to communicate sensitive and complex information effectively.
An awareness of the appropriate use of counselling skills.
Excellent skills of persuasion, motivation, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
Effective communication skills with people who have significant and complex communication and or swallowing difficulties.

In depth theoretical and practical knowledge of treatment and management of patients with co-morbidities and long term progressive conditions.
Ability to communicate in more than one language (e.g. bilingual)
