Exciting Opportunity: Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist (Generalist) – Acute Pathway
About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and dynamic Band 6 Speech and Language Therapist to join our Acute Speech and Language Therapy Team. This is a generalist role, providing assessment and management of adult patients with communication and swallowing difficulties across an acute hospital setting.
You will work as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team, delivering high-quality care to patients, underpinned by our commitment to patient-centred, evidence-based practice.

- Deliver specialist assessment, diagnosis, and management of dysphagia and communication disorders in acute patients.
- Independently manage a caseload of complex patients, prioritising effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Provide evidence-based interventions, supporting safe swallowing and communication.
- Collaborate with medical, nursing, dietetic, and allied health professionals (AHP) colleagues.
- Offer advice, education, and support to patients, families, and carers.
- Contribute to service development, audit, and quality improvement initiatives.
Where You’ll Work
Our teams operate across three main hospitals:
- Furness General Hospital (FGH) – Barrow
- Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) – Lancaster (full Emergency Department, Critical/Coronary Care units, and Consultant-led services)
- Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) – Kendal (General Hospital Services + Urgent Treatment Centre for non-life-threatening conditions)

Planned care includes outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day-case, and inpatient surgery, alongside local outreach services from facilities across Morecambe Bay.
Our Community Service provides adult-specific care in personal homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, and community hospitals, focusing on:
- Promoting independence
- Improving health outcomes
- Supporting condition management through high-quality advice, care, and support.
