Band 6 Ward Sister/Charge Nurse

Band 5 Registered General Nurse (RGN) – Junior Ward Management Development Role

Job Overview

This is an exciting opportunity to expand a Band 5 RGN’s professional career in Junior Ward Management, enabling professional development while supporting patient care.

The role fosters close collaboration with Ward Sisters, Ward Managers & Ward Matrons to ensure the safe, effective, and high-quality operation of the unit. As a key member of the Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT), the candidate will develop leadership skills while managing a unit of 22 patients and 39 staff members through exposure to essential systems:

  • HealthRoster
  • Datix & Incident Reporting
  • Safer Staffing Allocation
  • Nurse in Charge protocols
  • Complaints procedures
  • Patient satisfaction and outcome measures

Main Duties & Responsibilities

Patient-Centric Care

  • Work with Ward Sisters, Ward Managers & Ward Matrons to deliver an exceptional patient experience for patients, carers, and families.
  • Act as a Patient Advocate, supporting decisions under the Mental Capacity Act (MCA), Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS), Safeguarding policies, and patient health & wellbeing.

Team & Professional Leadership

  • Empower and educate peers, students, new recruits, and visitors while adhering to NMC Professional Standards & Trust Values.
  • Delegate responsibilities effectively to ensure high-quality patient care, while engaging with patients/families/carers and applying the Triangle of Care where needed.

Person Specification

Education & Qualifications

Essential:

  • Registered Nurse (Adult)
  • Numeracy skills for safe medication administration
  • Evidence of Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

Desirable:

  • Inpatient experience
  • Frailty dementia or palliative care exposure
  • Mentorship qualification

Previous Experience

Essential:

  • Leadership skills demonstrated in practice
  • Band 5 experience

Desirable:

  • Ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision

Key Skills & Competencies

Essential:

  • Effective communication (verbal, written): team updates, handover reporting to MDT members using SBARD (Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation).
  • Accurate clinical record-keeping (electronic & manual) following CNWL policies.
  • Sensitive yet assertive engagement with patients/carers.
  • Microsoft Word competency for letter & report writing.
  • Robust knowledge of NMC Code of Conduct.
  • Care planning – assessing, implementing, and evaluating patient care plans.
  • Strong empowerment & partnership-working skills.
  • Understanding of Mental Capacity Act (MCA), Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DOLS) & Mental Health Act impacts.
  • Quality improvement mindset with a focus on patient safety & outcomes.
  • Infection control & aseptic non-touch technique.
  • Manual handling & patient transfers (hoists, Sara Steady etc.).
  • Consent & medicines management (IV fluids, medications).
  • Clinical skills – wound management, catheter care, phlebotomy, canulation, stoma care, NEWS escalation, basic interpretation & recognition of deterioration.

Desirable:

  • Hands-on experience with DOLS & MCA referrals.
  • Safeguarding referral management.
  • Advanced expertise in selected clinical competency with documented professional development.
  • Supervision/line management training or HR skills (recruitment, sickness absence management).
