Highly Specialist Speech & Language Therapist (Acute Medicine & Healthcare for Older People) – Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB)

Job Summary

We are seeking a Highly Specialist Speech & Language Therapist (SLT) to join our Acute Medicine and Healthcare for Older People (HCOP) team at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB).

Our service supports patients with communication and/or swallowing disorders across wards including:

  • Acute medicine
  • Respiratory (including the respiratory support unit)
  • Emergency department
  • Healthcare for Older People

We offer:

  • A large but close-knit, skilled team with a robust supervision structure
  • Innovation, research, and clinical/professional development opportunities
  • Access to SLT-led Videofluoroscopy (VF) and Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) services
  • One of the largest acute SLT teams nationally (~40+ members) within a major teaching hospital serving regional and international patients

About the Team

Supporting patients across a wide range of acute settings, our team fosters collaboration, growth, and excellence. There are opportunities to:

  • Develop specialist skills in dysphagia and communication disorders
  • Participate in research, audits, and quality improvement projects
  • Work alongside multidisciplinary teams in a fast-paced, demanding environment

Main Duties & Key Responsibilities

The role involves specialist clinical input, including:

  • Assessing and managing patients with communication, airway, and swallowing disorders
  • Service development audits
  • Training and supervising junior colleagues/students
  • Working flexibly in a fast-paced, evolving healthcare environment
  • Utilising specialist instrumental assessments, including FEES and videofluoroscopy
  • Conducting quality improvement projects
  • Engaging in audits and presenting clinical outcomes

Personal Specification

Qualifications (Essential)

  • A good standard of secondary education (A-Level or equivalent)
  • BSc or recognised MSc degree in Speech and Language Therapy
  • ** Membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT)**
  • Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Completed RCSLT Level C/Level 5 EDS Dysphagia competencies (or equivalent)

Desirable Qualifications

  • Advanced competencies in:
    • FEES
    • Videofluoroscopy
    • Tracheostomy management

Experience (Essential)

  • Significant experience working independently with adult dysphagia caseloads at a specialist level
  • Proven expertise in medicine, respiratory, and Healthcare for Older People (HCOP) settings
  • Experience working independently within acute hospital environments
  • Collaborative multi-disciplinary team contributions
  • Demonstrated post-graduate training (short courses, personal study, conference attendance)
  • Experience supervising undergraduate SLT students and junior colleagues
  • Experience in audit, quality improvement, and people management

Desirable Experience

  • Membership of a relevant clinical effectiveness network (CEN)
  • Postgraduate education or research
  • Specialised Masters-level training
  • Familiarity with Trust’s strategic direction
  • Experience supporting patients with respiratory interventions (e.g. tracheostomy, NIV)

Additional Requirements

  • Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check required
  • UK professional registration (HCPC/RCSlT) mandatory
