Band 7 Risk Governance Nurse Neonatal

Band 7 Neonatal Risk Governance Nurse – University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust


About the Role

UHB (University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust) is seeking a Band 7 Neonatal Risk Governance Nurse for a part-time (18.75 hours per week), permanent role within the Neonatal Special Care Unit.

This position offers an experienced neonatal nurse the opportunity to lead on all governance issues—ensuring staff have the right knowledge, skills, and competence to deliver high standards of safe and effective care for babies and their families.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting robust incident investigations in a non-judgemental learning environment.
  • Leading Serious Incident Reviews (SIR) and Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
  • Fostering a patient safety-focused culture within the multidisciplinary team (MDT).
  • Developing and implementing policies and procedures to enhance service quality.
  • Ensuring confidentiality, continuous professional development (CPD), and -team leadership.

Main Responsibilities & Key Tasks

  • Leadership in Clinical Governance:

    • Oversee all governance-related matters, including incident investigations, complaints, and serious incident reviews.
    • Promote a non-blame culture where learning and improvement are prioritised.
    • Chair weekly/monthly governance meetings to ensure issues are addressed efficiently.
  • Incident & Risk Management:

    • Investigate all incidents and complaints comprehensively and non-judgmentally.
    • Use findings to drive root cause actions and Staff Light Learning Sessions to enhance practice.

  • Policy Development & Compliance:

    • Work with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to refine Safeguarding, Duty of Candour, and Patient Safety policies.
    • Ensure team compliance with effective risk assessment processes.
  • Staff Support & Training:

    • Act as an accessible visible leader, providing mentorship and continuing professional development (CPD).
    • Deliver training on confidentiality, information governance, and crisis management.

Requirements & Qualifications

Essential Criteria

✔ Registered Nurse, Registered Children’s Nurse, or Registered Midwife (on NMC or equivalent register). ✔ Post-registration qualification (Diploma/Masters level) in Neonatal Care Specialty. ✔ Prove Qualified in Specialty (QIS) accreditation. ✔ Confidentiality & concise reporting skills—with no record of misconduct. ✔ Band 6 clinical experience within Neonatal Care (minimum). ✔ Proven continuing professional development (CPD) history. ✔ Experience with:

  • Incident reporting processes (P-SIRF, Duty of Candour, Risk Assessment).
  • Information Governance policies.
  • Safeguarding Children procedures.

Desirable Skills & Experience

🔹 Leadership qualifications (e.g., management courses). 🔹 Familiarity with performance and capability procedures. 🔹 Experience in meeting chairing and action plan development. 🔹 Knowledge of ** Parent Craft Programme** practices.
