Senior Nurse/Charge Nurse – Medicine Ward
West Hertfordshire NHS Teaching Trust
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an aspiring leader to join the Division of Medicine at West Hertfordshire NHS Teaching Trust.
We are seeking a highly skilled, motivated, dynamic, and compassionate Senior Nurse/Charge Nurse (37.5 hrs/week) to lead a medicine ward.
About the Role
Our medicine wards care for patients with a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions, requiring comprehensive assessment, treatment, and ongoing management. The ward delivers safe, high-quality, person-centred care, promoting dignity, independence, and wellbeing. Underpinned by a multidisciplinary approach, we work closely with medical teams, therapists, and support services to ensure holistic and coordinated care for every patient.
As the Senior Nurse/Charge Nurse, you will play a pivotal role in:
- Shaping the ward’s culture through compassionate leadership
- Supporting staff development and continuous professional growth
- Ensuring high standards of care in a safe, people-focused environment
- Demonstrating a commitment to improving patient and carer experience
Key Responsibilities
- Clinical leadership—thoughtful oversight of patient care, ensuring clinical sound judgement in a fast-paced, acute setting
- Team oversight—proactive and accessible leader, reliable support system for the nursing team
- Quality improvement—driving enhancements in patient experience, care delivery, and ward processes
- Staff support—engaging with staff to foster a culture of excellent care
- Continuous learning—showcasing a strong commitment to professional development and education

Working Pattern
Full-time, Monday to Friday, 07:15–15:05 (flexible working arrangements may be considered).
Requirements & Expectations
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Excellent communication skills, built on compassionate approach to care
- Strong organisational abilities, with proven talent in managing a clinical area effectively
- Experience in leading day-to-day operations, prioritising patient experience and safe care
- A proactive, collaborative mindset and a track-record of positive team leadership
- Knowledge of best-practice care delivery, combined with clinical adaptability
- Commitment to continuous professional development and innovation in patient care
Training will be provided, with support for career growth and building towards leadership.
