Highly Specialist Psychoanalytic/Psychodynamic Psychotherapist – Part-time (18.75 hrs) Permanent Role

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Highly Specialist Psychoanalytic/Psychodynamic Psychotherapist to join West London Forensic Services (WLFS) based in Southall. This is a part-time (18.75 hours) permanent role within a well-established Forensic Psychotherapy Department, committed to reflective practice and high-quality, patient-centred care.

Role Overview

The post holder will deliver a specialist psychoanalytically informed psychotherapy service in inpatient forensic settings, working with individuals who have severe and complex mental health needs. This includes:

  • Undertaking psychodynamic psychotherapy assessments
  • Providing individual and group psychodynamic psychotherapy
  • Supporting the therapeutic ward environment through Reflective Practice groups
  • Providing consultation to multidisciplinary teams and supervision to qualified staff, trainees, and honorary therapists

The role will also involve service development, including teaching, training, audit, and research both within WLFS and the wider NHS Trust.

  • Undertake assessments for individual and group psychotherapy, integrating complex clinical information from multiple sources, including:

    • Referral details
    • Clinical records
    • Multidisciplinary team input
    • Risk documentation
  • Produce clear assessment reports, including:

    • Psychodynamic formulations
    • Recommendations on treatment suitability, modality, duration, and risk management
  • Manage an independent clinical caseload, delivering:

    • Individual psychodynamic interventions
    • Group psychodynamic interventions for complex, long-term needs
  • Facilitate Reflective Practice groups for:

    • Multidisciplinary teams
    • Professional staff groups
  • Support staff in managing the emotional impact of working in forensic settings

  • Perform Care Coordinator responsibilities where appropriate, particularly for:

    • Patients supported by trainees or supervised staff
  • Communicate effectively and sensitively with:

    • Patients
    • Carers
    • Colleagues
    • Promote engagement and collaborative multidisciplinary working
