Senior Specialist Dental Officer (Community Dental Services) – Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Dental Division of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to develop a specialist post within Community Dental Services. This role blends clinical excellence and leadership, requiring an experienced clinician to fulfil the following key responsibilities:
- Provide specialist dental care for patients accepted under the Special Care Dentistry (SCD) pathway, particularly those with additional needs due to disability, medical, or mental health conditions.
- Assume leadership and management roles, as delegated by the Head of Service, including:
- Directing service-led committee meetings.
- Participating in service development and improvement plans, aligned with team job planning.
- Exercising clinical supervision and overseeing professional development.
- Line managing and conducting appraisals for several dental officers.
- Working independently to deliver specialist dental services to the local population.

Clinical Responsibilities
- Assessment, diagnosis, and specialist-level dental treatment for adults referred under the SCD pathway, including those with physical or learning disabilities, complex medical conditions, or mental health needs.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive, patient-centred care.
Management Responsibilities
- Supervision and mentorship of junior/senior dental colleagues.
- Contributing to service planning, governance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Attending and actively participating in service-led forums, strategy sessions, and development workshops.

About the Birmingham Dental Hospital
The Birmingham Dental Hospital, based at 5 Mill Pool Way, Birmingham, B5 7EG, serves as an undergraduate and postgraduate teaching facility and is affiliated with the University of Birmingham’s School of Dentistry.
