Band C Dental Officer in Special Care Dentistry

Senior Specialist Dental Officer (Community Dental Services) – Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

About the Role

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Dental Division of Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust to develop a specialist post within Community Dental Services. This role blends clinical excellence and leadership, requiring an experienced clinician to fulfil the following key responsibilities:

  • Provide specialist dental care for patients accepted under the Special Care Dentistry (SCD) pathway, particularly those with additional needs due to disability, medical, or mental health conditions.
  • Assume leadership and management roles, as delegated by the Head of Service, including:
    • Directing service-led committee meetings.
    • Participating in service development and improvement plans, aligned with team job planning.
    • Exercising clinical supervision and overseeing professional development.
    • Line managing and conducting appraisals for several dental officers.
    • Working independently to deliver specialist dental services to the local population.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Assessment, diagnosis, and specialist-level dental treatment for adults referred under the SCD pathway, including those with physical or learning disabilities, complex medical conditions, or mental health needs.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive, patient-centred care.

Management Responsibilities

  • Supervision and mentorship of junior/senior dental colleagues.
  • Contributing to service planning, governance, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Attending and actively participating in service-led forums, strategy sessions, and development workshops.
