General Porter – Northampton General Hospital NHS Trust

About the Role

Porters at Northampton General Hospital are the main support for the hospital’s site in the secure and safe transfer of patients and equipment. This vital role spans 25+ wards and 60+ clinics, ensuring excellent service delivery and operational efficiency.

Duties and Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Safe and professional transfer of patients using wheelchairs, stretchers, and hospital beds
  • Movement of clinical equipment, collecting and delivering medical post
  • Careful handling of medical gases and facilities maintenance (e.g., cleaning porters’ trolleys)
  • Supporting radiology transfers (optional rota-based placement)
  • Assisting in the movement of deceased patients from wards
  • Contributing to multi-disciplinary teams while maintaining a high standard of patient care

Shift Requirements

  • Full 24/7 rota, including weekends and bank holidays (initially structured, subject to adjustment at short notice).
