About the Role
Workstream: Community Nursing – Night Shifts Contract: As & When Bank Location: Community-based in Birmingham & Solihull
Your Impact
Circle back to a compassionate role where your care directly improves people’s final days—in the comfort of their homes. As a Healthcare Assistant, you’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team, supporting individuals with personalised, palliative and end-of-life care across areas including: • Personal care (elegantly and respectfully) • Skin integrity & hygiene (maintaining high standards of cleanliness) • Nutrition/hydration assistance (alleviating distress) • Mobility & rest support (enabling comfort and dignity) • Symptom management (within agreed care plans) • Dignity-preserving communication (with patients + families)
You’ll also: Observe subtle changes in condition, promptly escalate concerns to registered professionals, and uphold safeguarding policies with integrity.

Key Responsibilities
- Assist with personal care tasks (toileting, bathing, dressing) in a compassionate and respectful manner.
- Monitor vital signs and symptom severity, reporting changes swiftly to the clinical team.
- Prepare & administer meals/snacks/water as per care plans, ensuring nutritional needs are met.
- Support mobility & positioning to enhance comfort (e.g., bed-making, wheelchair transfers).
- ** uphold hygiene standards**, including linen changes and domestic care in the home environment.
- Observe and document changes in the patient’s physical/emotional state, logging these in care systems.
- Communicate sensitively with patients and their families, ensuring they feel heard, respected, and supported.
- Adhere to safeguarding protocols, reporting any concerns per Marie Curie policies.
- Travel flexibly (~25 miles/day) between patient homes, including during unsocial hours.

Essential Requirements
✅ Previous experience in health or social care (preferably palliative/end-of-life support). ✅ Strong commitment to person-centred, dignity-preserving care with evidence of compassion. ✅ Professional sensitivity & communication skills to interact with patients/pals under stressful conditions. ✅ Problem-solving ability to adapt care plans and interpret subtle health changes. ✅ Self-sufficiency to work independently while collaborating in a multidisciplinary team. ✅ Basic IT proficiency (care records, email, digital training, mobile devices). ✅ Valid driving licence + access to your own car (with commercial insurance). ✅ Flexibility to cover night shifts (10:00 PM–7:00 AM), weekends, and bank holidays across Birmingham/Solihull.
Desired (but not mandatory):
- NVQ Level 2 in Health & Social Care or equivalent.
- Experience with hospital discharge bundles or community palliative services.
Working Conditions
Shift Pattern
- Night shifts only: Mon–Sun, incl. bank holidays.
- Uplifts apply:
- Weekends (non-Sunday): 26%+ increase on GBP £12.92
- Sundays/bank holidays: up to 83% uplift (hourly £23.97 max).
- Warning: Unregulated lie-in time may be required after shifts.
Travel
- 100% car usage required (no public transit feasible for visits).
- Mileage reimbursed at 55p per mile (up to 25 miles/day).
- Travel times may extend into pre-dawn or late-night hours during visits.
