Bank Paediatric Phlebotomist | Children and Young People | Competitive Hourly Rate | Flexible Working | Leeds – LS8

Spire Leeds hospital is currently recruiting an experienced Paediatric Phlebotomist to join the bank team. We require an enthusiastic, motivated individual to join the team within this expanding service. The post involves pre-booked ad-hoc sessions to deliver a high quality, caring and efficient phlebotomy service for 0-16 year olds, occasionally supporting adolescents aged 16 and 17 years.

The successful candidate will be required to work on a sessional basis, both alone and as part of the team. The role includes working within the children’s and outpatients department. Experience of performing paediatric phlebotomy by venepuncture and cannulation is essential.

Spire Leeds Hospital, located in Roundhay, Leeds, has been treating patients for almost 30 years. We are the region’s largest private hospital in terms of the range of services we offer and the number of consultants we work with. The hospital offers a range of services and facilities including four operating theatres, a sterile services department, a dedicated endoscopy suite, and a diagnostic and imaging department with an MRI and CT scanner. There are outpatient and physiotherapy departments providing services six days per week.

Duties and responsibilities

  • The post holder will assist in the provision of a child focused phlebotomy service, working within our Outpatient Departments
  • The Phlebotomist is required to collect blood samples by venepuncture and capillary methods from both inpatients and outpatients.
  • The phlebotomist will site cannulas for children undergoing investigative investigations whilst attending the CYP service a ward attender
  • To perform venepuncture and capillary sampling on children and infants unsupervised
  • Identify the analytical requirements from the request form and take appropriate specimens of either venous, capillary blood or heel prick tests.
  • Provide a source of education and practical support to the hospital team to achieve CYP blood collection competency

Who we're looking for

  • Recognised healthcare qualification or equivalent experience - NVQ L2 or NVQ L3 in child care
  • Trained and competent in venepuncture and capillary blood sampling
  • Experience working with children and infants ideally in a hospital setting
  • Ability to perform blood collection independently
  • Knowledge of specimen requirements, patient identification, and infection control
  • Strong communication skills with a compassionate, child-focused approach
  • Ability to support and guide staff in paediatric blood collection
  • Basic Life Support and safeguarding training
