Clinical Fellow in Bariatric Surgery
Applications are invited for a fixed-term (12 months) Clinical Fellowship in Bariatric Surgery at UCLH (University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust).
About the Post
The Bariatric Unit at UCLH was established in 2007 and serves as a designated high-volume Bariatric Centre. The unit specialises in advanced laparoscopic bariatric procedures, including:
- Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
- Sleeve gastrectomy
- One-anastomosis gastric bypass
- Complex revision surgery
This training-focused Fellowship is aimed at Senior Upper Gastrointestinal/Trainee Surgeons (pre- or post-CCT) with documented advanced laparoscopic surgical skills and a specific interest in bariatric surgery.
Key Objectives:
- Training accredited by the Royal College of Surgeons under the National Fellowship Scheme.
- Structured development of bariatric-specific surgical and non-surgical competencies.
Responsibilities
The Fellow will be accountable for:
- Patient Care:
- Full pre-, peri-, and postoperative management of bariatric patients.
- Clinical Duties:
- Primary data collection and bariatric audit.
- Preparation of patients for Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) discussions.
- Operating Theatres:
- Attendance at the majority of bariatric theatre sessions.
- Outpatient Clinics:
- Active involvement in bariatric outpatient consultations.
- Collaboration:
- Joint supervision and cover with two non-consultant surgeons for seamless service delivery.

Work Allocation: Certain theatre and outpatient sessions will be allocated exclusively to the Fellow, ensuring focused training without competition.
Provisional Weekly Timetable
Monday
- AM: 7:30am – Theatre
- PM: 13:00 – 18:30 – Theatre (time after outputs may differ)
Tuesday
- AM: Clinical day (not working)
Wednesday
- AM: 9:00am – Supervised Bariatric Outpatients
- PM: 13:00–18:30 – Theatre
Thursday
- AM: 7:30–9:00 Theatre OR 9:00–12:00 Bariatric Outpatients (alternating weeks)
- PM: 13:00–18:30 – Theatre (if not outpatient session)
