Main duties of the job

We are looking for someone with excellent communication skills and a keen eye for problem solving to join our Bed Management team.

This is a fast-paced role integral to supporting operational delivery of both elective and emergency pathways for patients requiring admissions to Oncology & Haematology.

You will manage the bed availability across the Cancer Care inpatient wards and Acute Oncology Service where are emergencies come through working closely with multidisciplinary teams.

We are looking for someone who can be flexible. Cancer Care Bed Managers currently provide a 7 day service covering the hours of 07:30-20:00. Shifts will be long days 12.5hr shifts with 1 hour break.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

  • Coordinate all admissions and transfers for Cancer Care at UHS and to other hospitals
  • Maintain an effective system for identifying the availability of beds to ensure that fluctuations in demand, clinical priorities and emergency admissions are dealt with effectively and efficiently
  • To attend our Care Group Huddle at 08:10 delivering our current bed position with admissions and discharges on teams.
  • Attend the daily site coordinator bed meetings and other care group meetings as required
  • To access service referrals and add to our elective admission weekly list
  • To manage effectively and efficiently the use of beds within Cancer Care

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience

Essential criteria

  • Health and physical abilities sufficient for the post (if necessary with reasonable adjustments with respect to the Equality Act/Disability Discrimination Act)
  • GCSE English and Maths minimum grade C, or equivalent qualification
  • Educated to vocational level 3 or an equivalent qualification level or relevant work based experience / training, plus detailed knowledge of secretarial and administrative procedures and systems in order to resolve many non-routine issues.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology and organisational policies / procedures in order to resolve problems or to develop and/or refine procedures
  • Working knowledge of MS word/excel

Desirable criteria

  • Degree level qualification or equivalent experience
  • Evidence of continuing personal/professional development
