Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to join our Bed Management Team.
About the Role
We are seeking a driven individual with excellent communication skills and a keen eye for problem-solving to support the operational delivery of elective and emergency pathways for patients requiring admissions to Oncology & Haematology.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage bed availability across Cancer Care inpatient wards and the Acute Oncology Service, ensuring emergency admissions are efficiently coordinated.
- Work flexibly within a 7-day service, covering shifts of 12.5 hours (07:30–20:00), with a one-hour break each day.
- Lead a fast-paced role with close collaboration across multidisciplinary teams to optimise patient care.
Detailed Job Responsibilities
- Coordinate admissions and transfers for Cancer Care at UHS and to other hospitals.
- Maintain a real-time system for identifying bed availability, balancing fluctuations in demand, clinical priorities, and emergency admissions.
- Deliver daily bed position reports at our Care Group Huddle (held daily at 08:10) via Microsoft Teams.
- Attend daily site coordinator bed meetings and other care group meetings as required.
- Process service referrals and update the elective admission weekly list.
- Efficiently manage bed utilisation within Cancer Care to ensure optimal patient flow.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
Qualifications & Experience
- Sufficient health, physical capabilities for the role (adjustments considered under Equality Act/Disability Discrimination Act).
- GCSE English & Maths (minimum grade C, or equivalent).
- Vocational Level 3 qualification (or equivalent), relevant work experience, or training demonstrating:
- Detailed knowledge of secretarial and administrative procedures.
- Ability to resolve non-routine issues with confidence.
- Medical terminology competence and familiarity with organisational policies/procedures, with problem-solving skills.
- Working familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.

Desirable Criteria
- Degree-level qualification (or equivalent experience).
