About the Role
BIAZA’s Communications Working Group (CWG) is seeking new members to join this strategic, forward-thinking group. The CWG advises on sector communication needs, supports task forces (e.g., the Social Media Task Force), and ensures cohesive, effective messaging across BIAZA and its members.
The CWG brings together specialists in:
- Public relations (PR)
- Marketing
- Social media management
- Public affairs
Relevant expertise from external organisations is also welcome, particularly where aligned with zoos and aquariums. While operating under BIAZA’s Mission Enabling Committee, its influence extends to other areas, including the Commercial Working Group and Species Advisory Committee.
Core Purpose
The Working Group focuses on:
- Embedding and sharing best-in-class communications practices across BIAZA and its membership.
- Analysing risks and opportunities specific to BIAZA’s audience, developing actionable strategies to capitalise on the latter while mitigating risks.
- Supporting and guiding BIAZA members in their communication efforts, providing both strategic advice and hands-on assistance as needed.

Methodology & Outputs
Key contributions include:
- Establishing a hub for communications expertise and development, fostering connections between professionals in zoos, aquariums, and academia.
- Conducting strategic assessments at regular meetings (quarterly: three online, one in-person) to monitor sector-wide risks, opportunities, and challenges.
- Leading task forces and workplans to develop guidance, resources, and opportunities for BIAZA members.
- Delivering expert guidance to the BIAZA Executive Office to ensure clear, impactful communications.
- Supporting workshops, discussion panels, webinars, and events as required by BIAZA and its committees.
Responsibilities
Core Activities
Applicants will be expected to:
- Attend and actively contribute to quarterly meetings (three online + one in-person).
- Assist in organizing the annual BIAZA Communications and Marketing Conference.
- Provide ad hoc support to BIAZA and members on communications projects.
Demographics Encouraged
BIAZA particularly welcomes applications from smaller zoos and aquariums.
Requirements
✅ Mandatory:
- Must hold a position within a BIAZA-member zoo or aquarium, with support from their institution backing your volunteer application.

✅ Highly Desirable:
- Previous experience in:
- Public relations, marketing, social media, or public affairs within the zoo/aquarium sector.
- Strategic communications, stakeholder engagement, or risk analysis for not-for-profit or sector-specific bodies.
- Familiarity with BIAZA’s mission, government policies, or industry challenges.
- Passion for improving communication standards within the zoological/academic sector.
Key Focus Areas
Potential initiatives guidance on:
- Digital strategy
- Social media trends
- PR campaigns
- Engagement with governments, media, or educational institutions
