Location: Greater Manchester Business area: Bethell Construction Positions: 1

Job Overview

Coordination of case study evidence, through liaison with operational management, ensuring a strong awareness and knowledge of the “Bethell story” underpinning a structured approach to planning, drafting, writing, and coordinating responses to bids and technical briefs set by clients and prospective clients.

Develop ideas shared by the bid team into work-winning tender proposals that differentiate Bethell above our competitors.


Principal Accountabilities

SAFETY

  • Employ safe working practices at all times and maintain a positive safety image.
  • Positively portray Bethell’s excellent health and safety record in all tender bids.
  • Visually promote the safety culture of the organisation, highlighting key performance metrics across the HSQE aspects of the business.

CUSTOMER

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of the client’s technical requirements, collaborating closely with the business to deliver responses.
    • Assess and differentiate the associated points structure within any tender quality assessment, targeting maximum potential marks based on the response assessment criteria.
    • Present a professional and approachable attitude toward clients.
    • Ensure commitments meet and exceed client expectations while fostering Social Value initiatives.
  • Engage proactively with clients:
    • Question ambiguity to ensure accurate and achievable commitments in submissions.
    • Underpin� the bid’s clarity and consistency.

PEOPLE

  • Collaborate closely with the wider Estimating team to develop relevant material and agile storyboarding that meets brief requirements.
  • Build internal and external relationships to create bids that effectively represent the Company’s culture and methodology.
  • Communicate complex information clearly to internal and external stakeholders:
    • Structure responses to be meaningful and easy to understand.
    • Actively gather relevant information from team members, maintaining an up-to-date library of case study evidence.
    • Index and oversee tender support materials across various client spectrums.

INTEGRITY

  • Produce high-quality and accurate bid and tender-related documentation.
  • Efficiently manage the end-to-end procurement process, ensuring timely planning and delivery of submissions.
  • Maintain an impeccable professional image for the company.
  • Strictly adhere to deadlines while maintaining high bid content and presentation standards, often working beyond standard working hours.
  • Carry out additional duties as specified by the line manager.

  • Research publicly available information on clients' sustainability policies and integrate their approach into bid responses.
  • Suggest innovative ways to demonstrate recycling and material re-use opportunities within bids.
  • Position Bethell as a leader in environmental matters and corporate social responsibility (CSR):
    • Highlight sustainable practices in operations across the organisation.
    • Promote alignment with clients’ social and Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) values.
  • GDOCUMENT operational activities with value-added planning contributing to better social value integration.

EXCELLENCE

  • Exercise critical attention to detail, proofreading, and editing to eliminate document errors, managing the review process for tender adjudication.
  • Propose compelling, visually creative proposals that promote the Bethell brand through unique concepts.
  • Analyze unsuccessful bids systematically:
    • Share constructive feedback with colleagues.
    • Develop action plans to implement effective improvements.
  • Secure and retain high-value clients through innovative, successful bid strategies.

Skills and Knowledge

  • Excellent and confident verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interrogate operational leads and extract detailed insights effectively.
  • Sharpen attention to detail balanced with solid editing and proofing capabilities.
  • Comprehensive construction industry knowledge.
  • Strong researching expertise.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and Visio.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Project is advantageous.
  • Capacity to interpret tender drawings, schedules, and complex documents accurately.
  • Well-developed persuasive skills harnessing logic and evidence.
  • Strong analytical thinking and adeptness at reading between the lines.
  • Exceptional organisational and multitasking abilities.
  • Commitment to client-focused dialogue, both internally and externally.
  • Deep awareness of company branding and image, with an obligation to promote the Bethell reputation.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor degree or a Diploma in a subject related to written English.

  • Preferably 2+ years of bid development experience, specifically for large construction contracts.

  • Previous bid writing skills demonstrated by prior submissions in a signing-off capacity.

    qualifying statements:

    • (Alternative: equivalent demonstrated ability from related bid experience like technical submissions.)
  • Desirable experience in written technical submissions within a contracting or construction environment.

  • Current full clean driving licence requirement.
