Billing Manager – Bristol (UK Bureau)
About the Role
We seek a Billing Manager to join our Finance department in Bristol, with responsibility for managing billing cycles across the firm’s UK-managed entities, including Dublin and the US office.
The successful candidate will lead the delivery of efficient, effective billing processes and ensure high-quality service standards. This includes forecasting and managing team needs, addressing operational challenges, and driving process improvements.
You’ll also work collaboratively with the wide finance team (including Revenue Controllers, Accounts Payable, Cashiers, and Credit Control), proactively advising the business on billing guidelines and best practice while guiding client and matter partners on adherence to external counsel and financial processes.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Expertise & Process Improvement
- Apply technical expertise and build strong relationships to ensure compliance with commercial terms and external counsel guidelines.
- Proactively review and optimise end-to-end billing processes, identifying efficiencies, cost-saving measures, and scaling team capacity.
- Ensure adherence to agreed best practices, policies, and processes while tailoring solutions to local requirements.
- Actively participate in audits, leading assigned workstreams and ensuring smooth coordination with regulatory standards.
- Liaise with:
- Cashiers team (on receipt allocation and disbursement processing).
- Accounts Payable (for compliance with financial reporting).
- Billing and eBilling teams (for accuracy in invoices, credit notes, and reimbursements).
Team Leadership & Service Delivery
- Manage a team of 7+ Billing Assistants, providing constructive feedback, mentorship, and professional development aligned with firm competencies.
- Orchestrate monthly billing cycles, meeting deadlines while aligning with revenue targets and departmental budgets.
- Report key progress to the Revenue Manager, UK CFO, and wider business in a structured, timely manner.
- Monitor and enforce service-level agreements (SLAs), including accuracy, timelines, and issue resolution.
- Maintain consistent billing patterns and special arrangements while handling irregularities efficiently.
- Escalate and resolve operational issues, proposing practical solutions and providing leadership in crisis scenarios.

Commercial Advisory & Process Optimisation
- Provide commercial and legislative guidance to drive cost efficiencies and better financial outcomes for the firm.
- Foster improvements within the Finance function, championing innovative process redesigns.
- Serve as a regional go-to resource on billing and financial best practices for clients and internal stakeholders.
Requirements & Qualifications
Essential Knowledge & Skills
✔ Extensive billing expertise with experience in high-volume, multi-entity financial operations (including cross-border billing). ✔ Proven track record in process transformation (e.g., automation, compliance, team efficiency initiatives). ✔ Exceptional attention to detail, with a track record of high-stakes data accuracy. ✔ Strong people management skills, including coaching, performance evaluation, and team development. ✔ Ability to operate under pressure, with excellent deadline management. ✔ Outstanding stakeholder engagement—including with clients, Partners, and internal teams (‘Diplomacy + Solution Orientation’). ✔ Professionally curious mindset with a proclivity for commercial growth opportunities.
Proficient Technical Proficiency
- Familiarity with billing systems, ERP software, and client engagement tools.
- Comfort with case workflows for project-based billing (e.g., phase-by-phase, contracted matters).
