Job Description:
bp is seeking a Bio Optimiser to join the GLIGHTS bench within our Supply, Trading & Shipping (ST&S) organisation. This role sits at the centre of bp’s European gasoline biofuels activity, supporting both prompt trading and strategic optimisation of existing positions. It is an opportunity to work directly with senior traders, develop the future of bp’s biofuels optimisation strategy, and contribute to one of ST&S’s fastest-growing global trading books.
ST&S is bp’s interface with traded markets across oil, gas, power, chemicals, renewables, carbon and financial commodities. Our mission is to enhance bp’s enterprise value through distinctive supply, trading, risk management and analytics capabilities. GLIGHTS is ST&S’s global light ends trading book, spanning gasoline, LPG, naphtha, petrochemicals and low-carbon molecules. With teams in London, Singapore, Chicago, Houston and São Paulo, GLIGHTS operates a global trading model with ambitious growth plans.
This role offers structured development, deep market exposure, and the chance to build optimisation capability within an established and expanding biofuels book. You will work closely with the European Book Leader and a highly skilled team to unlock value across bp’s biofuels portfolio.
Key Responsibilities:
Commercial Optimisation
- Optimise existing biofuels contracts across sustainability attributes, grades, timing, location, and quality.
- Deliver detailed hedging trade entry and exposure management with strong attention to detail.
- Develop and propose fundamentally grounded trading ideas aligned with GLIGHTS strategy.
- Contribute to bp’s regional biofuels market view and support strategic positioning.
Biofuels & Gasoline Interface Optimisation
- Optimise bp’s inland system interfaces across the UK, Germany and the Netherlands.
- Maximise downstream gasoline contract bio optionality.
- Run economic models to optimise:
- ethers supply programme optionality
- ethanol GHG supply programme optionality

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
