Bioinformatics Engineer, London
Head of Bioinformatics (Lead Bioinformatics Engineer)
About the Role
Isomorphic Labs is [apply]ing frontier AI to help unlock deeper scientific insights, faster breakthroughs, and life-changing medicines with an ambition to solve all disease. This role will play a pivotal part in [building a high-fidelity biological data layer] that serves as the foundation for our machine learning (ML) efforts.
You’ll collaborate in an interdisciplinary team driving groundbreaking innovation, contributing towards our ambitious goals while embracing a collaborative and inspiring culture. At Isomorphic Labs, the future starts with the curated data that drives AI-powered breakthroughs in drug discovery.
About Isomorphic Labs
Isomorphic Labs (IsoLabs) was launched in 2021 to advance human health by building upon and beyond the Nobel-winning AlphaFold system. Our interdisciplinary team of drug discovery experts and machine learning specialists developed powerful predictive AI models that accelerate scientific discovery at digital speed.
By leveraging the underlying symmetry between biology and information science, we aim to bring AI-forward drug discovery to life. Our innovative approach to molecular modeling, medicine design, and disease projection unlocks deeper insights and greater precision in treatment and disease prevention.
Today, we empower the science of digital biology and work toward our bold mission: to solve all disease with AI.
Your Impact
Your role is critical: you’ll help establish the foundational biological data layer that grounds all machine learning models at Isomorphic Labs. This involves:
- Moving beyond raw data ingestion to curate high-quality, standardized, and version-controlled datasets for ML training.
- Harmonizing disparate datasets (public/corporate) into a consistent, coherent biological representation.
- Enabling ML models, rational drug design, and computational biology efforts with a reliable, integrated data pipeline.
- Partnering with multidisciplinary teams (ML Research, Drug Development, Chemistry) to drive bioinformatics best practices and platform adoption.
- Addressing complex data challenges at the platform level, reducing time-to-insight for Discovery programs.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

What You Will Do
Technical Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain large-scale bioinformatics pipelines for high-throughput data processing, from raw formats (e.g., FASTQ, BAM, mzXML) to ML-ready datasets.
- Implement best-in-class bioinformatics practices for data ingestion, harmonization, and versioning to ensure reproducibility and consistency.
- Resolve identifier collisions, semantic drift, and metadata loss when mapping across multiple public databases (Ensembl, UniProt, Reactome, Open Targets).
- Act as a strategic bridge between product teams (ML, Biology, Drug Development, Chemistry) to accelerate data-driven discoveries.
- Participate in high-impact research projects as a "Deployed Engineer", working closely with domain teams to address technical gaps—while looping back findings into core technical systems.
- Provide documentation, training, and on-call support on data resources, annotation workflows, and curation best practices for wider adoption.
Collaborative Focus
- Drive standardized data primitives and platform adoption, reducing friction for researchers by internalizing repeatable workflows.
- Partner with ML teams to refine data preparation and quality to meet model objectives.
- Act as subject-matter expertise on data infrastructure, collaboratively troubleshooting challenges with engineering, biology, and chemistry.
Who You Are
Essential Qualifications
- Proven experience in large-scale bioinformatic pipeline development, handling raw sequencing/omics data (FASTQ, BAM, mzXML).
- Masters (MSc) or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or equivalence through industry experience in biotech/pharma.
- Demonstrated ability to deploy high-impact bioinformatics solutions into ** Muldisciplinary workflows**, focusing on user enablement.
- Strong proficiency in Python, including production-grade code optimisation, modularisation, and automation at scale.
- A track record of curating complex datasets within regulated environments (e.g., PHI in health tech or drug discovery).
