Biomedical Scientist – Microbiology Team
Location: University Hospitals Dorset, The Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Dorset Pathology Hub Grade: Band 5 Band 5 Duty Duty Band (Self-Certification): Requires ability to operate under direct supervision and demonstrate competency in a specific area of a lab discipline. Domestic travel within a few miles of the base location may also be required.
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced or nearing-qualified Biomedical Scientist to join our dynamic and supportive Microbiology team at University Hospitals Dorset. Based in our state-of-the-art, UKAS-accredited and IBMS-approved training laboratory, you’ll contribute to a comprehensive diagnostic microbiology service supporting regional healthcare providers.
This is an exciting opportunity to work within a purpose-built Dorset Pathology Hub, where your work will directly impact patient care through accurate and timely microbiological testing.
Key Responsibilities
- ** scopes and reports on specimens across all diagnostic microbiology domains**, including:
- Bacteriology
- Mycology
- Parasitology
- Serology
- Molecular diagnostics
- Process and analyse clinical samples adhering to high standards of quality and safety
- Participate in evening, weekend, and extended-hours rotas (shift work required)
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support optimal patient outcomes
- Participate in continuous professional development and cross-department training

Candidate Requirements
✅ Essential Requirements:
- Must hold (or be nearing completion of) an IBMS-accredited degree in Biomedical Science, or an equivalent qualification recognised for HCPC registration
- Preferred candidates will have HCPC registration as a Biomedical Scientist
- Direct laboratory experience is desirable but not mandatory
✅ Interim disqualifiers (addressable for Trainee appointments):
- Candidates not yet registered may be appointed as a Trainee Biomedical Scientist (under Annex 21 arrangements) until HCPC registration is achieved
