Specialist Biomedical Scientist (Microbiology) – Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

About the Role

Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has re-designed its Pathology services with new, state-of-the-art equipment, a new laboratory, and plans to install a new Lab Information Management System later this year.

An exciting opportunity exists for a Specialist Biomedical Scientist within microbiology.

The role requires:

  • A highly skilled individual with expertise in microbiological investigations, techniques, and instrumentation.
  • The ability to apply professional judgement and utilise specialist skills and knowledge to deliver timely and accurate results for clinicians.
  • Commitment to maintaining skills and knowledge through training and self-education.
  • A passion for trainng and mentoring registered biomedical scientists and associate practitioners.
  • Active involvement in -quality assurance, maintaining high standards of the laboratory.
  • Leadership in specific responsibilities aligned with a Band 6 post.

The postholder will contribute to the diagnosis, treatment, and clinical care of patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform the examination and processing of clinical samples from:
    • Diagnostic purposes
    • Screening applications
  • Conduct a wide range of techniques to:
    • Detect and identify pathogenic micro-organisms
    • Determine antibiotic susceptibility of significant bacteria
    • Detect viral infections and immunity
  • Maintain competence to operate unassisted in the laboratory while rotating across departmental sections. Develop a multi-skilled, flexible approach.
  • Utilise knowledge and experience to:
    • Select and perform laboratory tests
    • Interpret and report results
    • Validate the suitability of tests
  • Participate in internal and external quality assurance schemes:
    • Adhere to quality procedures
    • Document results
    • Take action if quality levels drop below acceptable limits
    • Conduct audits
    • Raise and manage non-conformances
    • Review and document findings
  • Assess the suitability of samples and provide technical advice to health professionals on:
    • Sample collection
    • Testing methods
  • Assist in the supervision and training of laboratory staff.
  • Ensure proper stock control and documentation of consumables.
  • Participate in:
    • On-call duties
    • Late night shifts
    • Weekend rotas
