Biomedical Scientist - Progressive Band 5-6

Job Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

Please see below for detailed job description of the role.

Main duties of the job

We are excited to advertise an opportunity to recruit two HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists into progression band 5-6 roles. Candidates must have current HCPC registration. One role will be specialising in Bacteriology and the other will be in Virology.

The department processes over 1,000,000 specimens per year. We employee almost 100 staff and provide a comprehensive 7 day service covering bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, virology, serology and parasitology and molecular testing.

You would rotate through sections of the laboratory, and be responsible for training others when you have gained competencies in those sections. You will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the section you are working on, and demonstrate troubleshooting and escalation when required.

The role involves 24/7 working on a shift pattern, including earlies, cores, lates, and night shifts. Candidates must be able to work all these shifts. Weekends and bank holidays are also worked on a rotation.

Teamwork, CPD, and good communication are key skills for this role.

Please note high volume of applications may result in the advert closing early

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.
