Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.
This role has been created to recruit two HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists into progression band 5-6 roles.
The successful applicant will either specialise in Bacteriology or Virology.
About the Role
The Laboratory Department at University Hospital Southampton processes over 1,000,000 specimens annually and employs around 100 staff. Our services cover bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, virology, serology, parasitology, and molecular testing, operating 7 days a week.
As a Biomedical Scientist in this role, you will:
- Rotate through different sections of the laboratory as you gain competencies
- Train and supervise colleagues once qualified in your area
- Manage day-to-day operations in your assigned section, ensuring smooth workflow
- Demonstrate troubleshooting and escalation skills when challenges arise
This is a 24/7 shift-based role, covering earlies, cores, lates, and night shifts. Candidates must be willing and able to work all shifts, including weekends and bank holidays on a rotating basis.

Detailed Job Description and Responsibilities
Core Employment Requirements
- Current HCPC registration is mandatory
- Must be willing to work across the shift pattern (early, core, late, and night shifts)
- Must work weekends and bank holidays on rotation
Progression to Band 6 will be based on:
- Successful completion of the IBMS Specialist Portfolio in your relevant discipline within 2 years of appointment
We welcome qualified Band 6 applicants if they demonstrate the required competencies.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
Qualifications & Registration
- HCPC-approved degree in Biomedical Science (BSc) or other HCPC-recognised degree/top-up qualification
- HCPC registration
- Evidence of current CPD activities
Experience
- Significant previous experience in a medical laboratory environment
- Either:
- Currently working towards an IBMS specialist portfolio (in your relevant discipline), or
- Hold equivalent alternate qualifications
Desirable Criteria
- Competency in hospital IT systems including Microsoft products (Outlook, Microsoft suite)
- Previous laboratory experience in a large acute hospital
