Biomedical Scientist - Progressive Band 5-6

Biomedical Scientist Roles (Bacteriology & Virology) – University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust

Job Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.

This role has been created to recruit two HCPC registered Biomedical Scientists into progression band 5-6 roles.

The successful applicant will either specialise in Bacteriology or Virology.

About the Role

The Laboratory Department at University Hospital Southampton processes over 1,000,000 specimens annually and employs around 100 staff. Our services cover bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, virology, serology, parasitology, and molecular testing, operating 7 days a week.

As a Biomedical Scientist in this role, you will:

  • Rotate through different sections of the laboratory as you gain competencies
  • Train and supervise colleagues once qualified in your area
  • Manage day-to-day operations in your assigned section, ensuring smooth workflow
  • Demonstrate troubleshooting and escalation skills when challenges arise

This is a 24/7 shift-based role, covering earlies, cores, lates, and night shifts. Candidates must be willing and able to work all shifts, including weekends and bank holidays on a rotating basis.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
