About us
We see proteins as programmable nanomachines, some of the most capable technology nature has ever built. And we think the proteins that will matter most over the next decade are not the ones evolution handed us. Planes, after all, do not fly like birds.
Over the last five years, protein design has exploded. Tools like AlphaFold and ProteinMPNN let designers generate new proteins far faster than anyone can reliably make them. Manufacturing has not kept up. That gap, between what can be designed and what can actually be produced at useful quantity and sensible cost, is now the bottleneck on almost everything a designed protein could become.
Closing that gap is the whole point of Change Bio. We are building the manufacturing platform for protein designers. Our platform uses engineered Komagataella phaffii (K. phaffii) yeast to express recombinant proteins through precision fermentation, turning a design into real, usable protein reliably and rapidly. About the CADMUS project
This role is part of a project funded by the UK's Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA), subject to contract negotiations.
You would join CADMUS (Computer Aided Design of Materials for Universal Synthesis), a UK research consortium made up of Imperial College London, the University of Sheffield, and Change Bio, funded through ARIA. CADMUS has a bold goal: to develop a new way of manufacturing advanced magnetic materials by using designed proteins as programmable scaffolds to organise inorganic particles with nanoscale precision. It brings together machine learning for protein design, engineering biology, materials science, magnetic characterisation, and scalable biomanufacturing, to test whether proteins can control the structure of rare-earth-free magnetic materials in ways conventional manufacturing cannot.
Change Bio is responsible for the protein production and biomanufacturing side of CADMUS, and this role sits right at the heart of it. You will produce the designed proteins that the consortium tests as scaffolds for materials assembly, turning designs from the computational team into expressed, characterised protein. The programme runs on rapid design-build-test-learn cycles, so our bioreactor output feeds directly into the materials work, and the results feed back to shape the next round of designs. You will be part of a highly interdisciplinary team working at the interface of AI, biology, and materials science, helping to build a new platform for sustainable functional-materials manufacturing.

The role
We are looking for a full-stack Bioprocess Engineer to lead the rapid production of de novo protein prototypes end to end. Your job is to turn novel protein designs into real, purified protein, from building the expression strains, through fermentation, to downstream processing and recovery.
This is a hands-on, in-person lab role. You will build strains, run bioreactors, and carry out downstream processing day to day, driving fast iteration between the designs we receive and the proteins we ship. We give bright people room to find the real problems and solve them, so you will own this work rather than wait to be told what to do next. What you will do
- Build and engineer K. phaffii expression strains for new protein targets.
- Plan and run bioreactor cultivations to express recombinant proteins in K. phaffii.
- Run downstream processing and recovery, and optimise both upstream and downstream conditions to improve yield, speed, and reproducibility.
- Keep clear, honest records and feed results back into the platform to shorten the design-to-protein cycle.
- Work closely with the CTO to develop and implement novel process automations and ML-guided bioprocess controls.
We care about how the work is done, not just the headline number. Careful method and good record-keeping matter to us as much as a strong yield.
What we are looking for
- Around 2 to 4 years of relevant experience, from industry or research.
- People who grok ("to understand intuitively or by empathy") biology, and who know their way around a wet lab. If you don't have experience of the entire stack, from strain engineering to freeze-drying, we can teach that.
- Desirable: bioreactor and downstream-processing experience, not essential if you have the biology and can pick the rest up fast.
- Desirable: comfort with laboratory automation.
- Desirable: some Python for data handling or process work.
- A relevant degree in a life sciences or engineering discipline is common, but we care more about what you can do, and how quickly you learn, than how you got there.

Location
This role is based in person at our lab in the Cambridge area, UK. It is not a remote or hybrid position. You will need the right to work in the UK. We are not able to sponsor visa applications at this time.
