TNBA Participant – Birth Doula Trainee (Program Position)

In the spirit of providing exceptional care, we invite you to join our Birth Doula Trainee Program—a professional development opportunity within our Community Health Network Birth & Postpartum Doula program.


About the Role

The Birth Doula Trainee at CHN will gain hands-on experience while completing DONA International’s approved Birth Doula training. This includes:

  • Participating in and supporting our existing CHN Birth Doulas in client care
  • Attending births as part of the DONA International requirement for hands-on experience
  • Transitioning to an independent Doula role upon completion of training (ALL trainees will eventually advance to full-partnership status within the CHN Doula program)
  • Providing emotional, physical, and informational support to families through:
    • Prenatal assessment
    • In-hospital companioning during labour and birth
    • Postpartum follow-up

As part of CHN’s clinical team, the Doula Trainee must uphold our values of compassion, professionalism, and excellence in patient-centered care.

The Experience

The Birth Doula Trainee is a professional member of the CHN birth team, supporting clients and colleagues alike as they journey through childbirth. You will work with experienced Birth Doulas to:

  • Follow families through their birthing experiences, offering unwavering support as needed
  • Facilitate the birthing process in alignment with the family’s preferences and clinical guidelines
  • Collaborate with medical staff, patient families, and the CHN team to provide seamless care

Key Tasks

  • Learning fundamentals outlined in DONA International training with direct mentorship from professional CHN Birth Doulas
  • Attending designated birth experiences to meet DONA requirements
  • Conducting prenatal appointments, labour support, and postpartum visits
  • Practicing comfort measures, active birthing approaches, and partnering with families’ care preferences
  • Supporting CHN’s�óä patient-centered and complementary care philosophy
  • Demonstrating readiness for independent doula practice after certification

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED certification
  • Completion of DONA International Birth Doula training (details outlined below)
  • Completion of all Network training including:
    • Clinical Caregiver Orientation
    • AVADE Training
    • CHN Network Orientation
  • Must demonstrate teamwork, independence, and professionalism in a clinical or perinatal setting
  • Ability to attend births on short notice without fixed scheduled hours (on-call availability required)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience working with birthing families (in any setting), even unpaid (within a doula’s role, coaching or mentor work)
  • Basic knowledge of coping strategies for labour, relaxation techniques, and/or holistic birthing companionship approaches
  • Passion for continuous learning in the perinatal field and a commitment to CHN’s priority: community-driven patient care

Trainee Requirements During Program Completion

As the training culminates:

  • DONA Application and Interview must be passed to proceed to independent CHN Doula role
  • CHN Supervision Period ensures seamless service continuity
  • Graduation from trainee program eopens way for further doula collaborations
