BMS Service & Project Engineer

Section 1 — Advert
Job title: BMS Service & Project Engineer
Location: Poole / Bournemouth based — a couple of key client sites plus project work across the region (hybrid, with remote diagnostics)
Salary: £45,000+ depending on experience, plus vehicle / car allowance, annual bonus and full benefits
Type: Full-time, permanent
1.1 About us
Kernow Controls is an established building controls engineering company founded in 2010. As a Tridium, Siemens, Honeywell and Beckhoff integrator, we design, deliver and maintain BMS, smoke control and PLC automation systems across an unusually varied client base — NHS and healthcare, pharmaceutical and clean-room environments, infrastructure, Formula 1 (wind tunnels and test cells) and commercial buildings, to name a few. Our portfolio includes BMS design for Heathrow Terminal 2A (including a 50MW cooling-station control system) and Crossrail. We're built on a simple principle: be the best in our field and deliver what we promise, creating safer, healthier buildings and happier users by making complex systems simple to control.
1.2 The Role
This is a predominantly service-focused role with genuine variety, for an engineer based around Poole and Bournemouth. You'll look after a couple of key client sites and take on project and upgrade works alongside the service commitment — with a clear route to expand into PLC-based automation work as you grow with us. It's a role with real autonomy and the technical backing of an experienced engineering team.
1.3 What You'll Be Doing
- Delivering planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive service on BMS / controls systems at client sites
- BMS fault-finding across field equipment, cabling, panels and software — on site and via remote diagnostics
- Installing, modifying and loading system software
- Supporting upgrade and project works, including pre-commissioning checks and client handover
- Participating in the on-call rota, responding to client faults
- Opportunity to develop into PLC-based automation projects across our sectors
- Collaborating with the wider engineering team on UK-wide service contracts

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

1.4 The Variety On Offer
Because we're a multi-discipline integrator, you won't be doing the same thing every week. Our work spans BMS, smoke control and PLC automation, across sectors including NHS/healthcare, pharmaceutical and clean-room, infrastructure, Formula 1 (wind tunnels and test cells) and commercial buildings.
1.5 What We're Looking For
- A background in BMS / controls service and maintenance engineering (or equivalent qualification)
- Hands-on experience with BMS/controls platforms — Tridium/Niagara, Siemens, Honeywell, Trend or similar
- PLC knowledge would be beneficial (and there's scope to grow this side of the role)
- Computer literate, with the ability to work independently and manage your own diary
- A full UK driving licence (essential), and evidence of the Right To Work In The UK
- A practical, customer-focused approach and a genuine passion for building controls
Looking to move across? We'll also consider strong controls engineers from adjacent fields (e.g. industrial or process/PLC controls) who want to move into BMS — we invest in training, including Niagara and NVQ L4 BMS qualifications.
