Position: Bookkeeper (Accounts Assistant)
Location: Remote
Contract: Part-time, flexible hours, minimum 15 hours per week
Reports to: Client Manager
About the Role
We are a forward-thinking accountancy practice supporting a wide range of UK small businesses with their bookkeeping, compliance, and advisory needs. We are looking for a dependable and experienced Bookkeeper to join our team on a flexible-working basis.
The ideal candidate will be confident working with multiple small business clients, managing their day-to-day bookkeeping, and communicating professionally as part of a friendly, client-focused practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage bookkeeping for multiple small business clients using cloud-based accounting software (primarily Xero).
- Process sales and purchase invoices, ensuring accuracy and correct VAT treatment.
- Perform bank, credit card, and payment-platform reconciliations (e.g., Stripe, PayPal, Airwallex).
- Maintain well-organised financial records, ensuring all documentation is correctly filed and linked within the software.
- Assist with preparation of VAT returns, including identifying discrepancies and ensuring timely submissions.
- Support accountants during year-end processes by providing accurate schedules and reconciled balances.
- Communicate with clients to clarify queries, request missing information, or provide updates.
- Monitor cash flow trends and flag anomalies or issues where relevant.
- Contribute to maintaining and improving bookkeeping processes across the practice.

Skills & Experience Required
- Proven bookkeeping experience within an accountancy practice or multi-client environment.
- Strong knowledge of Xero and related add-ons (Hubdoc).
- Familiarity with financial processes specific to small businesses (VAT schemes, CIS, sole traders, Limited companies).
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to work independently across multiple client accounts.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Solid understanding of UK VAT and bookkeeping standards.
- Ability to handle sensitive financial information with professionalism and discretion.
Desirable
- AAT Level 3/4 or equivalent qualification
- Experience supporting small businesses across industries such as creative, trades, consultants, or hospitality.
- Confidence managing workflows within an accountancy practice environment.
- Experience with additional platforms such as QuickBooks, FreeAgent, or practice management tools.
