About The Role

We are seeking a highly organized, proactive, and flexible Senior Bookkeeper to join our dynamic team. This role offers an excellent opportunity for individuals who enjoy managing multiple client accounts across various sectors and thrive in a varied, fast-paced environment. As a Senior Bookkeeper, you will be responsible for managing day-to-day bookkeeping operations, ensuring accuracy and compliance, and delivering exceptional service to our clients. You will work closely with Accountants and Client Managers to facilitate smooth financial processes and support high-quality client outcomes. Reporting directly to the Financial Director, this position plays a crucial role in maintaining the financial health of our clients and supporting the overall efficiency of our practice.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess prior experience in a similar accounts or bookkeeping role, preferably within an accountancy practice. A strong numerical aptitude, keen attention to detail, and excellent communication skills—both verbal and written—are essential. Proficiency in spreadsheets and accounting software such as Xero, SAGE, or QuickBooks is required. A good understanding of VAT, payroll processing, and financial reconciliation processes is also necessary. Candidates should demonstrate a proactive approach, the ability to work independently, and a commitment to maintaining high standards of accuracy and compliance. Previous experience working with external bodies such as Inland Revenue, banks, or auditors will be considered advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Record and process daily financial transactions, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Reconcile sales taxes, payroll taxes, and bank accounts at month-end to ensure financial accuracy.
  • Monitor and report on financial transactions, providing insights and support for financial decision-making.
  • Manage accounts receivable and payable processes efficiently to maintain healthy cash flow.
  • Process checks and handle routine banking transactions.
  • Prepare and submit VAT returns in compliance with HMRC regulations.
  • Oversee sales and purchase ledgers, ensuring timely and accurate entries.
  • Assist the Financial Director with cash flow forecasting, departmental budgeting, and cost centre analysis to identify efficiencies and streamline workflows.
  • Handle monthly payroll processing using appropriate accounting software, ensuring timely and accurate payments.
  • Communicate effectively with Inland Revenue, banks, and external auditors as required, maintaining professional relationships.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across departments to foster teamwork and ensure seamless financial operations.
  • Support the implementation of process improvements and maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant financial regulations and best practices.
