Site Chamberlain – Civil Engineering Role

Location: Sandhurst, UK Type: Contract Rate: Competitive Start Date: ASAP

Key Duties & Responsibilities

  • Site Preparation & Planning

    • Interpret construction and drainage drawings to determine location, depth, and dimensions of the chamber.
  • Setting Out

    • Measure work areas and set out the first courses of bricks or pre-cast concrete rings.
  • Building the Chamber

    • Lay bricks and engineering blocks to construct perfectly square, vertical, or circular chamber walls.
  • Internal Rendering & Benching

    • Shape and smooth the internal chamber floor (benchings/channels) using mortar and rendering techniques to ensure smooth water flow and prevent blockages.

  • Component & Waterproofing Installation

    • Accurately install drainage channels, pipe connections, and access covers.
    • Apply damp-proofing courses (DPC), waterproof renders, and sealants to prevent groundwater infiltration.
  • Compliance

    • Ensure all work meets local building regulations, structural safety standards, and environmental guidelines.
    • Maintain safety compliance in deep excavations, using proper shoring and PPE.

Essential Skills

  • Precision & Attention to Detail – Chambers must be perfectly plumb and level, accommodating heavy iron access covers without rocking.
  • Material Knowledge – Familiarity with heavy-duty engineering bricks, mortar ratios, and watertight masonry techniques.
  • Physical Fitness – High stamina for lifting heavy blocks, working in confined or deep spaces, and handling physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions.
  • Tool Proficiency – Efficient use of trowels, spirit levels, lasers, and brick-cutting tools.
