Translator Role
Location: Glasgow Office or Home-Based/Remote
Hours: 7.5 hours per week (with potential for ad-hoc overtime)
Contract: Permanent Salaried
Salary: £35k to £50k (Fully Qualified) & 31k (Trainee) per annum, pro-rata

We are a leading provider of Face-to-Face Interpreting, Video Relay Services, and Video Remote Interpreting and Translation throughout the UK. Our services enable effective communication between the UK's community of more than 150,000 Deaf British Sign Language (BSL) users and hearing individuals.
Our Video Relay Service allows users to make and receive BSL-interpreted video calls, ensuring seamless and accessible communication. In addition, our Translation Team produces high-quality BSL translations for both internal business requirements and external client partnerships. The Role
We are looking for a Registered Sign Language Translator (RSLT) or Trainee Sign Language Translator (TSLT) to join our Interpreting & Translation Team. This is a varied role encompassing live online translation services, recorded translations, quality assurance activities, and collaboration with colleagues across the wider business. RSLTs will provide live translation support through our Video Relay Service and pre-booked customer appointments, while both RSLTs and TSLTs will undertake recorded translation work for internal and external clients. There may also be opportunities to contribute to assessment and training activities, depending on your skills and experience.
Duties and Responsibilities
Online Translation Services (RSLT)
- Take calls from customers through our Video Relay Service, providing live translation and English proofreading support where required.
- Deliver translations from BSL to written English and from written English into BSL.
- Provide pre-booked translation sessions for customers.
- Follow established procedures and professional standards when carrying out translations.
- Work within agreed service boundaries and role expectations.
- Prepare appropriately for scheduled translation assignments.
- Effectively manage time and workload within customer sessions.
- Maintain accurate records where required.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures and professional codes of conduct.
- Participate in relevant Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities to maintain and enhance professional skills.

Recorded Translation Services (RSLT & TSLT)
- Manage workload in line with priorities and deadlines assigned by management.
- Prepare for translation assignments, including reviewing source material and carrying out any necessary background research.
- Ensure equipment and workspace are set up appropriately for professional recording standards.
- Produce high-quality BSL translations of internal and external communications, policies, training materials and other content.
- Deliver translations using autocue systems, feed interpreters or alternative supported methods where required.
- Upload completed work to designated systems and locations.
- Carry out quality assurance reviews of colleagues' work as required.
- Participate in internal development and training activities.
- Collaborate with teams working in other signed languages to ensure consistency and alignment across services.
- Contribute to the ongoing improvement of workflows, standards and translation resources.
Additional Responsibilities (Dependent on Skills and Experience)
Assessment Activities
- Manage assessment workload in line with assigned priorities.
- Review recorded assessments from prospective interpreters and translators.
- Assess and mark submissions using agreed marking frameworks and quality standards.
- Complete assessment activities within agreed timescales.
- Provide feedback where required.
- Support the development and improvement of assessment tools, resources and processes.
Training and Development Activities
- Prepare and deliver training sessions as requested.
- Support the development of CPD programmes and learning resources.
- Contribute to interpreter and translator pipeline development initiatives.
- Share specialist knowledge and best practice with colleagues across the organisation.
- Assist with mentoring or coaching activities where appropriate.
Person Specification
Essential Skills and Experience
- Registered with NRCPD, SRLPDC or RBSLI as a Registered Sign Language Translator (RSLT) or Trainee Sign Language Translator (TSLT).
- Experience working across a range of domains and settings.
- Experience providing sight translations and translations from pre-prepared materials.
- Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively.
- Strong customer service skills and a customer-focused approach.
- Confidence using technology and digital communication platforms.
- Ability to film self-translations professionally using appropriate lighting, equipment and recording techniques.
- Excellent organisational and time-management skills.
- Commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Flexible and adaptable approach to work.
