Senior Build Engineer, Bazel
About the Role
We are seeking a talented Senior Build Engineer (Contractor) to join King’s Game Production team within the Shared Tech organisation. This position will enable you to shape the future of our client technology platform, helping King to power some of the world’s most popular mobile games—such as Candy Crush Saga. The vision of Shared Tech is to provide a competitive technological advantage for game teams at King, ensuring they deliver outstanding player experiences.
The role is based at King’s office in London, providing proximity to the collaborate teams you'll work closely with.
Responsibilities
- Define Core Build System Architecture – Collaborate with engineers to design a flexible and scalable Bazel-based build system for our platforms, ensuring a solid foundation for future expansion.
- Provide Technical Expertise & Training – Conduct in-house training sessions on Bazel and BuildBuddy to accelerate knowledge acquisition and facilitate a smoother migration.
- Improve Developer Experience – Evaluate and optimize workflows, tooling, and IDE integrations to minimize friction and enhance productivity for developers using Bazel.
- Identify & Mitigate Technical Challenges – Proactively discover and address feasibility obstacles, technical debt, and design flaws to ensure a maintainable and efficient build system.
- Collaborate with Key Teams – Work closely with the Game Production Build Team and Game Teams to implement best practices and create documentation for a sustainable long-term build strategy.

Skills & Qualifications
Required Skills
- A passionate commitment to programming and a focus on quality and polish.
- Analytical mindset with a natural curiosity about understanding the entire tech stack as a build engineer.
- Proven experience working with Bazel in a project targeting at least two of the following platforms: Windows, Linux, macOS, iOS, or Android.
- C++-based project experience (additional preference).
- Familiarity with writing Bazel definitions in Starlark.
- Worked with C/C++ projects from a build or development perspective.
- Expertise in designing and maintaining build systems for long-term projects.
- Ability to write clean code effectively.
- Skills to identify and mitigate technical debt and design flaws.
- Proficiency in written and spoken English.
- Ability to conduct in-house training on technical aspects of Bazel.
- Can write clear, easily understandable guidelines.

Preferred/Bonus Points
- Experience with CMake meta build systems.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly and simply.
- Proven contributions to a Bazel-related open-source project.
- Experience managing and configuring BuildBuddy SaaS.
