Job Description
Building Inspector – Chelmsford
Are you interested in being a Building Inspector? This could be your opportunity to excel as a Building Inspector within one of our Building Control teams, playing a critical role in safeguarding public safety, supporting sustainable building practices, and maintaining high standards in the built environment while supporting SOCOTEC’s continued success.
As SOCOTEC grows, so do our teams. We’re looking for a dedicated Building Inspector to join our Building & Real Estate division and wear the SOCOTEC badge with pride.
Role Overview
We are seeking a proactive, reliable, and flexible Building Inspector to join the Building Control team. In this role, you will:
- Inspect construction sites at various stages
- Advise on regulatory requirements
- Work collaboratively with architects, builders, and developers to ensure safe, structurally sound, and code-compliant buildings.

Key Responsibilities
Your tasks will include (but are not limited to):

Conduct comprehensive site inspections and regulatory assessments
- Perform building inspections at various construction stages to ensure compliance with Building Regulations
- Review structural, architectural, and mechanical designs
- Assess building materials, construction specifications, and fire strategies against relevant Building Regulations and allied legislation

Supervise inspection activities and enforce regulatory compliance
- Act as a Registered Building Inspector (RBI) within your competency and registered class
- Supervise lower-class RBIs and graduate trainees
- Interpret and enforce national and local building regulations, including:
- Fire safety
- Energy efficiency
- Accessibility
- Environmental requirements
- Issue formal notices on compliance breaches under the Building Safety Act 2022

Prepare detailed compliance documentation and provide consultancy services
- Produce comprehensive inspection reports, compliance certificates, and regulatory approval documentation
- Maintain accurate records ensuring traceability and compliance with local authority requirements
- Assist clients with Building Regulations consultancy advice where SOCOTEC is not acting as the Registered Building Control Approver
Qualifications & Requirements
To be a successful Building Inspector, you should be able to demonstrate:

Professional qualification and regulatory registration at senior level
- Hold membership of RICS, CABE, or equivalent (or be qualified by suitable experience)
- Ensure CPD (Continuing Professional Development) requirements are met to broaden and develop skills
- Demonstrate compliance through registration as an RBI at an appropriate level

Excellent communication and client relationship management skills
- Strong interpersonal and relationship-building abilities
- Ability to work effectively with clients and deliver excellent client care across all interactions and project engagements
