Building Inspector – Chelmsford
Are you passionate about safeguarding public safety and ensuring high standards in construction? Join SOCOTEC as a Building Inspector in our thriving Building Control team and play a vital role in shaping code-compliant, sustainable, and safe buildings.
We’re seeking a proactive, reliable, and detail-oriented professional to join our Building & Real Estate division. You’ll be inspecting construction sites across various stages, advising on regulatory compliance, and collaborating with architects, developers, and contractors to uphold industry standards—helping us build a safer and more sustainable future.
About You
You’re a solution-focused technical expert with:
- A natural ability to work methodically but flexibly, adapting to complex sites and deadlines.
- Strong problem-solving skills, spotting issues early and communicating them effectively.
- Excellent stakeholder management, balancing technical rigour with client collaboration.
- A dedication to professional growth, staying ahead of new building regulations and industry trends.
Responsibilities
In this role, you’ll take ownership of:
- Inspection & Compliance
- Conduct expected site inspections, from foundation work to handover, ensuring adherence to building regulations and safety standards.
- Assess structural design, fire strategies, mechanical systems, and materials against legislation, including the Building Safety Act 2022.
- Oversee lower-class Registered Building Inspectors (RBIs) and trainees, ensuring consistency and professionalism.

- Detailed Reporting & Consultancy
- Prepare compliance certificates, formal notices, and thorough inspection reports to meet authority requirements.
- Advise clients on technical compliance, offering expert insights even when SOCOTEC isn’t the Registered Building Control Approver.
Key Requirements
To thrive here, you’ll demonstrate: ✔ Senior-Level Technical Qualification – Membership of RICS, CABE, or equivalent (or equivalent experience) required. ✔ CPD Commitment – Active participation in continuous professional development. ✔ Registration – Must hold registration as an RBI at an appropriate level. ✔ Communication & Relationships – Exceptional client-facing skills, ensuring clarity and trust across all project phases. ✔ Technical Rigour – Ability to analyze scenarios, identify risks, and implement solutions—combined with a keen eye for regulatory detail.
