Job Description

Building Inspector – Derby

Are you interested in becoming a Building Inspector? This role offers the opportunity to excel within one of our Building Control teams, playing a critical role in: ✔ Safeguarding public safety ✔ Supporting sustainable building practices ✔ Maintaining high standards in the built environment

As SOCOTEC grows, its teams expand, and we’re seeking a dedicated, proactive, and flexible Building Inspector to join the Building & Real Estate division.

In this role, you will:

  • Inspect construction sites at various stages
  • Advise on regulatory requirements
  • Collaborate with architects, builders, and developers
  • Ensure buildings are safe, structurally sound, and code-compliant

Key Responsibilities

You will typically undertake:

Compliance Inspections & Assessments

  • Conduct comprehensive site inspections to ensure compliance with Building Regulations
  • Review structural, architectural, and mechanical designs
  • Assess building materials, construction specifications, and fire strategies against relevant legislation

Regulatory Enforcement

  • Act as a Registered Building Inspector (RBI) within your competence and registered class
  • Supervise lower-class RBIs and graduate trainees
  • Interpret and enforce national and local building regulations (e.g., fire safety, energy efficiency, accessibility, environmental compliance)
  • Issue formal notices on regulatory breaches under the Building Safety Act 2022

Documentation & Consultancy

  • Prepare detailed inspection reports, compliance certificates, and regulatory approvals
  • Maintain accurate records for traceability and local authority compliance
  • Provide Building Regulations consultancy to clients (where SOCOTEC is not the RBiCA)

Requirements

To succeed in this role, you should:

  • Professional qualification & regulatory registration:
    • Hold membership of RICS, CABE, or equivalent, or demonstrate equivalent professional experience
    • Maintain Continuing Professional Development (CPD) objectives
    • Be registered as an RBI at an appropriate level (3G/3H)
