About the Role
Our construction team at RM Engineering is undergoing a transformational shift, focusing on insourcing and in-house development across our property, automation, and maintenance portfolios. As part of the Royal Mail Group, we’re launching a new, future-focused opportunity for a hands-on Building Surveyor to support our drive towards safe, efficient, and innovative buildings nationwide.

Core Responsibilities
As the Building Surveyor, you will be responsible for:
Technical & Surveying duties
- Conducting detailed building fabric surveys and condition assessments
- Performing intrusive investigations (e.g., decay, damp, structural issues)
- Preparing technical reports, feasibility studies, and detailed scopes of work
Design & Compliance support
- Assisting in fabric design development, including layouts, detailing, and compliance reviews
- Ensuring alignment with performance standards, Building Regulations, and fire safety measures
- Managing building condition data and asset lifecycle assessments, making investment recommendations

Project & Documentation management
- Drafting tender documentation, including specifications, Bills of Quantities (BoQs), and quality standards
- Providing on-site technical assurance (inspections, compliance checks, snagging, and defect management)
- Supporting through warranty periods and defect resolution
Safety & Risk Management
- Collaborating with CDM Duty Holders to manage construction risks
- Communicating and overseeing safe working methods and risk mitigation
- Ensuring adherence to CDM 2015, Health & Safety legislation, and internal governance policies
Key Skills & Experience
- 10+ years’ experience in building surveying, with expertise in fabric assessment, defect diagnosis, and technical reporting
- Strong knowledge of Building Regulations, fire safety, access standards, and compliance frameworks
- Ability to produce (scope of work) SOWs, specifications, and detailed drawings
- Familiarity with CDM 2015, health & safety regulations (H&S), and construction compliance
- Highly organised, with the ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining accurate records and governance
- Excellent communication skills, capable of influencing stakeholders (contractors, internal teams, external partners)
- Experience in refurbishment, maintenance, or compliance-based projects (preferably within construction/estates management)
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams (e.g., architects, structural engineers)

Requirements
Qualifications
- Degree in Building Surveying (or equivalent experience)
- MRICS status (preferred) or actively pursuing it
- Valid CSCS card or Health & Safety passport
- IOSH Managing Safely or NEBOSH General Certificate (desirable)
- Fire safety or fabric compliance training (advantageous)
Essential
- Full UK driving licence (due to national travel requirements)
