About The Role
The Building Surveyor Position
Gateley Smithers Purslow are seeking a full-time Building Surveyor to join their growing team based in Nottingham, with a focus on Midlands-based and surrounding projects.
This roles requires:
- Providing support to the Surveying team across diverse projects, primarily insurance-related.
- Handling residential and commercial buildings in various construction forms.
- Acting as key advisor under the leadership of a Line Manager.
- Managing assigned projects within one’s area of authority.
- Training and guiding supporting team members.
Accurate team support will demonstrate the successful candidate’s ambition, drive, and commitment to customer service. Communication skills must enable maintaining professional mannerism while promoting company vision.
Responsibilities
The Building Surveyor will be responsible for:
- Building Analyses: Inspecting and providing expert advice on design, construction, maintenance, repair, and refurbishment of all building types and sites.
- Technical Reports: Preparing acquisition surveys, condition reports, measured surveys and defect investigations.
- Documentation Management: Drafting reports, schedules of work and detailed specifications.
- Project Coordination: Designing works and overseeing projects according to building contracts and current technical standards.
- Legislative Compliance: Understanding and applying health and safety, party wall, building regulations, and planning law.
- Client Acquisition: Supporting marketing efforts to promote company services and secure projects.
- Compliance: Adhering to administrative procedures, personnel policies and Health & Safety regulations.

Person Specification
Ideal candidates should demonstrate:
- BSc (Hons) in Building Surveying or equivalent qualification
- Professional experience in consulting engineering, surveying, architecture and planning sectors
- Clear understanding of:
- Technical standards & recent statutory requirements
- Current publication updates relevant to the field
- Keen attention to detail in insurance repair projects
- Mix of in-depth domain expertise and hands-on skills (e.g., defect diagnostics, report drafting)
- Ability to work to tight deadlines while managing budget constraints
- Strong legislative knowledge, including:
- CDM Regulations 2015
- Party Wall Legislation
- Building Regulations Compliance
- Technical proficiency in maths, scientific analysis and IT tools
- Problem-solving mindset to analyse and delegate tasks methodically
- Effective communication:
- Verbal (client presentations, internal discussions)
- Written (detailed technical reports, correspondence)
- Must exhibit a proactive, flexible and adaptable work attitude to suit varied project demands
