Job Description:

Our purpose is to deliver energy to the world, today and tomorrow. For over 100 years, bp has focused on discovering, developing, and producing oil and gas in the nations where we operate. We are one of the few companies globally that can provide governments and customers with an integrated energy offering. Delivering our strategy sustainably is fundamental to achieving our ambition to be a net zero company by 2050 or sooner.

How would you like to serve as a strategic advisor to the SVP for Downstream R&D? To partner with the SVP Downstream R&D to drive strategy, improve performance, and enable effective decision-making across the organisation.

The Business Advisor demonstrates experience, energy, and influence to drive progress against organisational priorities, with significant focus on the safe and successful delivery of Downstream R&D transformational programmes and on connecting strategy to value-led execution across the businesses we serve.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Act as a trusted thinking partner to the SVP, helping develop strategy, priorities, and key decisions, and ensuring sharp connection between Downstream R&D strategy and downstream business value.
  • Develop and maintain the Downstream R&D priority architecture, including monthly priority updates from VPs and TLT pre-reads for the EVP.
  • Support the SVP in delivering strategic projects and help in efficient execution of projects.
  • Run the Downstream R&D performance and reporting cadence: priorities tracking, EPR cycle, monthly team brief content, and follow-through on actions from LT and steering committees.
  • Support SVP organisational goal-setting in focus@bp using delegate access, and cascade goal-setting requirements to VP’s.
  • Maintain executive-level transparency on portfolio performance, value delivery, and operational risks (including cyber, product quality, security and safety).
  • Provide senior programme oversight for Downstream R&D transformation programmes.
  • Set the Downstream R&D LT operating rhythm: agendas, pre-reads, safety moments, cyber moments, Pulse / Focus@bp updates and priorities management; convene the SVP, VPs and key advisers around the right priorities at the right time.
  • Lead Downstream R&D contributions to Technology Team priorities, including coordination with EVP BA and other SVP BAs on shared priorities, performance reporting and processes.
  • Coordinate scheduling and content for "Keeping Connected" calls, team briefs and townhalls.
  • Draft and quality-assure SVP communications, including monthly team brief messages, leadership announcements, staff communications and transformation comms.
  • Handle senior collaborator engagement for the SVP across Technology, businesses (Refining, Fuels Marketing, bp bioenergy), Procurement, Finance, Comms and Digital.
  • Lead preparation and execution of external engagements.
  • Represent the SVP in the BA community across Technology ensuring alignment and shared standard methodology.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
