About the Role: Business Architect & Org Design Lead (Associate Director)

We are seeking a Business Architect & Org Design Lead (balanced between Manager and Associate Director in consultancy terms) to lead our Strategy+ consulting engagements. This role is at the heart of translating high-level strategy into executable, long-term business outcomes.
You will work directly with clients in sectors including infrastructure, public sector and regulated industries, delivering creative and impactful solutions through:
- Operating model design, ensuring efficiency and scalability
- Transformation and governance frameworks
- Organisation design and capability improvement
- Performance improvement across people, process, and systems
This position spans from problem solving to stakeholder management and strategic business development. Your work will dominate a consultative skillset in translating innovative ideas into everyday operational improvements.
Key Responsibilities
As Business Architect & Org Design Lead, you will be instrumental in strategy execution and organisational change—here’s what your day-to-day will look like:
- Lead complex consulting engagements or high-value workstreams throughout the project lifecycle
- From initial scoping and method definition, to delivery and continuous improvement
- Design effective tools and methodologies tailored to client challenges, ensuring:
- Scalability, efficiency
- Clear and practical recommendations for transformation and capability elevation
- Build trusted relationships with senior client stakeholders and serve as their thought-partner
- Align expectations, shape discussions, and act as a key day-to-day consultant
- Translate nuanced analysis into clear, actionable insights for executive stakeholders
- Develop concise decision roadmaps, executive summaries, and insightful presentations
- Facilitate strategic workshops and cross-functional collaborative thinking
- Shape stakeholder agreement on priorities, risks, and trade-offs for transformation programmes
- Horizon scan emerging trends to inform future-proof client strategies
- Provide insights into disruptors and sophisticated market challenges
- Lead and coordinate a diverse range of disciplinary teams
- Bridge AECOM’s specialised expertise to help clients unlock interconnected opportunities
- Maintain rigorous controls on scope, risk, quality, and commercial outcomes
- Proactively identify and mitigate issues before they escalate into project obstacles
- Own business development opportunities and future growth pathways
- Identify high-value follow-on projects and contribute to proposals to develop key client relationships
- Mentor senior consultants and junior consultants
- Elevate team capability in problem-solving, analysis, storytelling, and client engagement
- Optimise team set-up based on project needs while supplementing internal growth and strategic direction

Key Qualifications and Profiles

The real operative value here lies in the balance between fluent analytical thought and customer-centric delivery. We are looking for:
Strong core consulting background with:
- Proven expertise leading management consultancy projects, advisory transformations, or operational improvement initiatives—either sold by an external consulting firm or managing strategy as a part of an in-house function.
- Ability to tackle intractable, complex challenges and deliver consistently high-quality work under dynamic timelines.
- Strong executive communication skills to captivate an audience with complex data, distilling it into fulfilling narratives and compelling strategies.
- Adept at engaging senior stakeholders—aligning interests while maintaining robust influence and decision-making capabilities.
- Commercial savvy broken down into nuances of proposal and account management, managing client scope and delivery risks to suite shared expectations.
Hands-on managerial ability:
- A pragmatic, practical mindset—not purely theoretical—especially knowledgeable about executing transformations in client environments.
- Experience creating scalable processes and target operating models, enhancing efficiency and innovation ecosystems.
- Demonstrated commitment to performance excellence in fast-paced, change-driven environments, where multiple priorities MUST coexist without compromise to quality.
- Skills to adapt, pivot, and lead effectively throughout project lifecycles.
Evolvement and ambition:
- Typically, the role of a thought leader and influencer across the client base; exceptional communicators who can build both credibility and strong networks.
- Vision to expand market opportunities through relationship-building, understanding how value is driven through delivery and capability building.
Skills and Attributes That Stand Out:
Educational Foundation:
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant business, engineering, technology, operations, strategic management, or sector specialization.
- Postgraduate qualification or relevant professional certifications is advantageous (e.g., PMP, PgCert Strathclyde, Coaching diplomas).
