Business Development Lead
Take the next step in your career with Herrington Carmichael and play a pivotal role in driving the continued growth of our ambitious, award-winning law firm. This is an exciting opportunity to shape and deliver business development initiatives across key practice areas, working alongside senior stakeholders to generate new opportunities, strengthen client relationships, and support the firm’s strategic growth objectives.
About Herrington Carmichael
Herrington Carmichael LLP isn’t your average law firm. We’re a Top Tier Legal 500 and The Times Best Law Firms recognised practice, combining over 180 years of heritage with a modern, ambitious approach to delivering full-service legal solutions for businesses, families, and individuals. With over 200 people across our Farnborough and Reading offices, we’re known for our commitment to growth, building lasting relationships, fostering collaboration, and striving for excellence in everything we do.
The Opportunity
We are looking for an experienced and commercially minded Business Development Lead to join our growing Business Development & Marketing team.
Working closely with Heads of Department, particularly within Real Estate, Private Client and Employment, you will play a key role in driving revenue growth, strengthening strategic relationships, and identifying new opportunities to support the firm’s continued success.
This role would suit an established Business Development professional looking for their next challenge, but we are equally interested in speaking with individuals who have developed strong client relationship, sales, account management, or sector-focused business development experience and are looking to apply their commercial and interpersonal skills within a professional services environment.
Whether your background is in legal services, property, financial services, healthcare, or another relationship-driven sector, this is an excellent opportunity to use your network, commercial awareness, and people skills to make a measurable impact.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
