The Vacancy

The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) is a research centre operating within Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs) 4-9, taking academic research and maturing it to the point where it can be exploited by industry. We work with global corporates and SMEs alike, helping them; embrace latest technology, improve productivity and maximise value creation opportunities & competitive advantage.

The purpose of this role is to facilitate significant and strategically relevant growth across our Industrial Growth sector, as part of our broader general manufacturing industry engagement, through the identification and conversion of sales opportunities. These opportunities will primarily be direct industrial projects with an awareness to complementary ‘collaborative research & development’ (CR&D) activities that are completed in partnership with industry organisations and a variety of public sector bodies. Ultimately the focus is on delivering high impact manufacturing transformation for individual organisations, industry sectors and UK Plc.

Duties and responsibilities:

The main duties of the Business Development – Industrial Growth role are :

  • Deliver significant revenue growth within Industrial Growth / General Manufacturing sector activities
  • Accountable for an order intake target aligned to a combination of account management growth and new business activities
  • Proactively manage and expand our commercial relationships with our existing Members, key customers and new prospects
  • Identify opportunities within existing customer base and external market to create mutual value
  • Understand customer’s technological and strategic roadmaps, needs and requirements
  • Develop and maintain strategic/key account plans, utilising Miller Heiman methodologies
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to provide world class outcomes
  • Lead generation, pipeline management and reporting through the phases of opportunity identification, validation, qualification and closing

Person Specification:

Essential skills, competencies and experience:

  • Experience of building and closing multi-million-pound sales pipelines
  • Consultative / solution selling experience within Business Development roles
  • Proven ability to identify and translate complex customer aspirations into realised outcomes
  • Good written communication skills e.g. concise proposal writing
  • Experience of working with and updating Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems
  • Adept at managing customers’ expectations in line with agreed project deliverables
  • An agile mind with a passion for transformation
  • Financially literate
  • Ability to engage with internal stakeholders, particularly engineers, to gain and credibly communicate an understanding of technology and engineering opportunities
  • Driving licence

Desirable skills, competencies and experience:

  • Familiarity with, and application of Miller-Heiman sales methodology and experience of developing strategic accounts
  • Established network of clients across general manufacturing with turnover above £500m
  • Knowledge of engineering, manufacturing techniques and change management challenges
  • A degree (in Business or Engineering)
  • Ability to innovatively identify and resolve issues using a strong analytical approach
  • Experience of working in an innovation, research and development environment
  • Ability to challenge the status quo with a requisite level of emotional intelligence
  • Experience of working collaboratively with both public and private partners
